Do we really want to search for alien life?

We might find some.

No, if it is anything like human life we are going to end up trying to kill each other. If it isn't anything like human life we will end up killing them.

Of course we do. Discovering alien life would be the single greatest event in human history. We should not neglect this goal out of fear. Yes, in the past we have not been exactly benevolent in regards to less advanced civilizations, but we have certainly evolved since then, as last I checked we do not go around exterminating tribes for ****s and giggles. If life is even remotely rare in this universe, the cultural exchange and study alone would be more valuable to an alien race than any one planet's worth of resources, considering how many we've discovered in such a short amount of time.

If there is an alien civilization that can invade and destroy us, they would have found us on their own.

After first contact, it will unite humanity in a way no one ever thought possible when they realize they're not alone in the universe. Poverty, disease, war. They'll all be gone within the next fifty years.

...Well, at least that's according to Commander Troi.

The laws of physics protect us...for now

If we find life beyond our solar system, we'll never be able to communicate or visit it because of the speed of light

Never say never. Even assuming we have it (physics) right, there are still theories regarding getting around that speed limit that we just cannot yet test due to insufficient technology.

The limit on the speed of light simply allows you not to travel faster than the speed of light through space. It says nothing about being able to manipulate space itself. We do know how to build a warp drive; there's just the tiny problem of requiring energy on the scale of the whole galaxy for it to really do anything.
