Adolf Hitler makes a cameo appearance as KFC propaganda boy on Thailand.

Colonel Sanders may not be one of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' favorite folks, but even his most vehement critics can concede that Yum Brands' KFC mascot isn't a fascist dictator looking to control Europe and wipe out entire populations.

But that distinction was apparently more than a fried chicken joint in Thailand could fathom. A Bangkok restaurant co-opted the KFC logo and replaced Colonel Sanders' image with that of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler for its "Hitler" fried chicken shop.

Yum Brands and KFC are now threatening legal action against the restaurant after the sign was brought to their attention by Footprint Thailand Handbook author Andrew Spooner, who tweeted an image of it in May.

"Very bizarre Hitler Fried Chicken shop in Thailand. I kid you not. Complete with pic of Hitler in bow tie," Spooner noted.

Is it just a case of cultural wire-crossing or perhaps a tasteless play for publicity? If only that were so. CNNTravel noted back in February that the Hitler image has become a cultural icon and a fashion statement among Thai youths. McDonald's mascot Ronald McDonald was pictured with a mustache similar to Hitler's in the CNN story, which noted that Hitler's image has taken on similar pop-culture significance in South Korea, Japan and India.

At shops in Bangkok, for example, T-shirts featuring Hitler as a Teletubby, a panda and a Japanese-style comic book character are sold alongside similar caricatures of Michael Jackson, Che Guevara and Kim Jong-Il.

"It's a lack of exposure to history," Harry Soicher, a Romanian who teaches at a Bangkok high school, told CNN. "If you don't live in Thailand, you may find it hard to believe they really mean no harm."

Bangkok resident Alan Robertson told The Daily Mail the chicken was "pretty good" and said his server told him the shop's owners thought Hitler was a "good image." Yum Brands' response: Get your ignorant hands off our mascot.

"We find it extremely distasteful and are considering legal action since it is an infringement of our brand trademark and has nothing to do with us," a spokesman for Yum told The Huffington Post.

Uh I'm pretty sure the crazies at PETA have compared him to Hitler. Hell I think Ingrid Newkirk said something like "Chickens go through a Holocaust every day."
