Republicans considering shutdown of the government unless Obamacare is defunded

If this gets off the ground, it should be pretty fun to watch. This will be a good test of just how much power the conservative wing of the party has over the establishment and leadership. They're already trying to set this up as the true litmus test of conservatism and position to the ACA.

I have to believe it's not going to happen. It would basically have to be the thing that ignites the schism in the GOP that breaks it in two. They're not going to let that happen, it would be a disaster for the party.

You say this like it's a bad thing...lol. Anyway, I believe the leadership knows how bad this would be, but the problem is the base and the politicians that represent them really like this idea and will consider any vote for appropriations as a vote for Obamacare. I don't see how they get out of that, even if they MUST get out of it. That's why this is so interesting.

It's not necessarily a bad thing from my perspective, but it would be from theirs.

I know. I guess it would still be bad because it would mean the government wouldn't be funded, and that would affect a lot of people negatively. It would pretty much be worth it if it caused an irreparable split in the GOP though.

i think there's already a sharp crease in the GOP between the religious right social conservatives, and the true fiscal conservatives already just begging for a tear.

They should have a decently easy road in 2014 and may still find a way to ruin it. Good job Republicans

Regardless of what you think of Obamacare, it is clear that the federal government badly needs to get its fiscal affairs in order. Otherwise, we are going to continue to face potential "government shutdowns" every few months as we keep kicking the debt can down the road.
