Previous shutdowns

So there was a Republican Senator on TV being interviewed, and he was insisting over and over that This administration sees the situation as a game because they closed the Lincoln Memorial whereas previous administrations during "slowdowns/shutdowns" (he specifically said that, in that way, each and every time) did not.

That was literally his entire point.

Is this a fair point? Am I missing some greater context?

Obama's closed the Lincoln Memorial, and placed two large plastic hotels on Baltic Avenue! He clearly thinks this is a game!

1. He's a politician. The only time he isn't pushing an agenda is when he is asleep.

2. Blocking off open air monuments (or ocean access) is ridiculous.

Is Obama like Stalin, with papers on every little thing literally crossing his desk as he reads them over and signs off on every little thing?

I mean at least with Stalin you could legitimately put the deaths he caused on him, because he had the information literally at his fingertips and just rubber stamped (well, signed off) on the death warrants, en masse.

Do people really think he is the evil chessmaster, and he specifically checked off on this on some list thinking "MWAH HA HA +1 point to Obama!"?

At worst, maybe he was simply unaware of the precedent (having other things on his mind)?

Prior to a Carter Administration memo in 1980, a government shutdown didn't literally shutdown anything. Everything kept running because there were no instructions to stop. The shutdowns after that, during the 80s, lasted a few minutes each over the weekend. So you can you see how the Lincoln Memorial would have been unaffected by those shutdowns, but it's completely bull**** claim.

The administration does see it as a game. The proof is in the pudding. Obama is basically acting like a spoiled little brat who isn't getting what he wants and then he takes all his toys and leaves. His toys being things like the WWII memorial that actually costs money to close instead of leave open. What a douche.

I've seen this brought up before. Basically, the source of the "Lincoln was kept open during the 1995-1996 shutdown" stems from a few old articles saying tourists were still able to visit the memorials, including the Lincoln and the Vietnam memorials. There are photographs which show what looks like Park Police closing the Lincoln Memorial off, but there are also old pictures that clearly show people visiting the monument despite a nearby sign saying it was "closed to visitor services." (But "visitor services" could just imply services like Park Rangers, who provide information about the memorials wouldn't be there, and the info booths would be closed.)

The Grand Canyon National Park apparently remained opened because the state of Arizona decided to pick up the tab.

Arizona tried to do the same thing this time too, but the Federal Government rejected the state's offer to pay for maintaining the park.

And anyone who thinks the Department of the Interior would never unnecessarily close things down and would never play political games should read this link.

Who is even affected by the parks and memorial being closed? A tiny subset of a tiny portion of a single "state" in the country.
