NOW child abuse is wrong in the church.

Seattle, Washington (CNN) -- To fight child abuse by priests, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops revised its 2002 charter Thursday, the group said.

Child pornography is a crime against church law and the abuse of someone who is mentally disabled is equivalent to child abuse, the conference said in a statement on its revised Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.

So, child abuse before this time was apparently ok in the church. Am I reading this correctly?

Not at all.

First of all, according to the part you quoted the charter says nothing about child abuse itself. It says abusing someone mentally disabled is equivalent to child abuse, meaning that if you don't support the latter you shouldn't support the former. Second, even if they said "child abuse is not tolerated", that doesn't say anything about its previous state of toleration. Third, reading the article itself proves that this is an attempt to further reduce such abuse within the Church, implying that they've never found it okay.

I guess pointing out facts is considered "offensive" now

Actually, it is. I've been warned and even banned for merely bringing up a certain fact about Aisha, Muhammad's wife.

Well I'm sure they made a hell of an effort to eradicate the problem, instead of sweeping it under the rug, or relocating people.

I have been as well for similar things

I don't like like the Reichskommissars on GameFAQs, either, but there's nothing we can do about censorship in any other venue, really. The freedom to speak the truth (let alone the freedom to think) is dead.

These "freedoms" are things you willingly "gave up" when creating you account. This isn't a free speech issue.
