This is quite a funny video on the subject.

He was being metaphorical of course, not that he would spell it out if anyone asked him what he meant.

Jesus seems pretty straightforward when He said "THIS IS MY BLOOD"

Well, at least the first Christians believed so. Just ask Ignatius of Antioch.

^This.

Sometimes I'd like to ask God why He allows poverty, suffering, and injustice when He could do something about it. But Im afraid He'd ask me the same thing.

Why does it matter what Ignatius believed?

It would be easy enough to say Ignatius was a tool and move on.

It doesn't matter if you care or not, the thing is that it is a fact that the first Chrisitians believed that the Eucarist was Christ's body and blood. Why we know this? Because there is EVIDENCE, witnesses to the Apostles themselves telling us so.

And why does Ignatius matter? Because he is an apostle himself, he is the child that sat at Christ's lap in the Gospels and was named Bishop of Antioch by the Apostles. If the "opinion" of a guy matyred in the name of Christ doesn't matter then those of people from the 1500s onwards shouldn't matter also.

Excuse my terrible English.

It would depend on their interpretations wouldn't it? You don't get to be right by virtue of being chosen. If all humans are fallible then there is no reason to assume that they couldn't have gotten it wrong.

Then Christ failed. Choosing fallible apostles to continue his message and work? Terrible idea.
