Can you repent with good deeds?

#1HeroicSomaCruzPosted 11/25/2012 7:50:22 PM
If someone does something they can't forgive themselves for, and are sure they're going to hell for it, could they change the rest of their lives doing something for a good cause to redeem themselves?

Self-sacrifice, charity, rescuing, etc.

No good actions will "undo" the evil you may have done. You'll still have to learn to face that and live with it. However, doing good to the point where you can look back and comfort yourself with the fact that you've mostly done good is a decent place to be.

According to Christianity (which is what I'm assuming you're talking about), no. You cant earn salvation. It can only be given.

But faith without works is dead. It isn't 100% about faith, and not 100% about works. Faith is more important, but good deeds are also important.

Short answer- No.

Long Answer- The Lord says the only way to repent is confess with your mouth and repent with your heart. No good deeds will get you into heaven no matter how good of a person you are. If that was the case then there would be no point in sending gods son. Whats the point if people can get to heaven without jesus? Jesus is the only way. Confess sin, change from it, and follow jesus.

Sometimes I wonder if people here believe in reincarnation. Regardless of deeds, you will be reborn. I'm not saying I do, but I've always considered it.

There's also being a wandering ghost.

reincarnation is pure idiotic notion. why would anyone want to come back here. People suffering worst pains in purgatory don't want to come back here, get the drift. And lightest sufferings in purgatory are worst then any on Earth.

Futurama and Family Guy just seem like a floating white space, and in the former, they were playing DnD.

I agree with this, but I also think that good deeds are not the means of repentance, they are the result.

If you are truly repentant and want to turn away from the evil youve done in the past and reform yourself as a better person, good deeds will come of it. But I think that turning away and pursuing of good is itself repentance. You are who you are, not who you were.
