The point of the story isnt 'eternal hell' its used to make a broader point about helping others. The point is, dont be like the rich man and ignore the plight of beggers.


Why threaten someone with eternal hell then? Do you think all his references about hell are parables?

I think most references to hell are actually talking about death/destruction. In fact most of the words translated 'hell' literally mean 'grave.' Warnings about 'hell' are usually juxtaposed with promises of eternal life, and theres more than a few places where death is clearly singled out as the punishment for sin.
