Do you Christians here think children should read the bible?

Yeah I'd let them read the whole thing so they can be atheists from an early age.

Children should read the Bible.

As a literary work, the Bible, at least the New King James, is a beautiful and hugely influential artistic work. It would be next to impossible to read and understand great western works like Shakespeare and western culture in general, without understanding the Judeo-Christian backgrounds such things are based upon or make reference to.

To treat the Bible as divine truth and a compass for our morality is another thing entirely. It should be up to children to treat the Bible as a literary piece of fiction or divine truth.

I won't force them to, only because I don't think it should be a chore. But I am exceedingly thankful for all the Bible-oriented children songs that my parents had me listen to as a kid. I inadvertently memorized a good portion and learned many great moral lessons.

Buy them the manga Bible and they'll WANT to read it.

They probably will not take it seriously as a religion, though.

It's easy to claim that a thing is self-evident when you've already convinced yourself that it is.

Children should read the bible, but they should do so in Bugs Bunny's voice so everything comes out sarcastic.

Im not planning on having kids, but I really don't think that people should be exposed to this stuff until they're at least teenagers. Partially because I don't believe we should indoctrinate people into religion but teach them to be free thinkers, but partially because, yes, the Bible is full of adult content. It's basically a strong R if we had to assign a rating to it. Gratuitous violence (just read about Ehud's death in Judges), sexual content, adult themes in general.

Why do you think children should be indoctrinated into "free thinking"?

Is it because you hold that value dear, but don't think others should teach their own values?
