Not quite. You don't have to be on the same side to be friends. He did not change his views, but they have withdrawn support of some of the more controversial organizations that they used to give to.

I would say he sided with them on the issue of certain inflammatory groups which were using the "sanctity of marriage" to promote a political agenda, rather than promoting their own spiritual agenda. It's one thing to politely state that your privately-funded marriage counseling is only applicable to heterosexual couples, since the "textbook" for the counseling is the Bible. It's another thing to protest and/or oppose the rights of homosexuals to have civil marriages, in a country which supposedly doesn't support establishment of one religion.
