Why do Christians wear the cross?

#1freakzilla316ftPosted 2/18/2013 5:01:31 AM
If Jesus had been stabbed to death with a spear would they have wore a spear instead? What if he was drowned to death? People were crucified before him and after him.

So? What's your point?

That him being crucified wasn't a special event. If he did even get crucified.

He was also stabbed by a spear...which was likely the immediate cause of death.

You seem to be mixing up "special" and "unique". Also, are you under the impression that Christians are unaware of the prevalence of crucifixion throughout the Roman Empire for some reason?

Because it's a symbol of our salvation. Jesus' crucifixion was unique in the sense that he, being God and man, and though being perfect, bled and died for us.

Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."

1 Corinthians 1:17-18
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Galatians 6:14
But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Philippians 2:8
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Hebrews 12:2
Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

A cross reminds me of Jesus and the things he did for me. If a spear played the same role, Id wear a spear.

Might wear a spear anyway, actually, that sounds ridiculously awesome.

In fact, the cross has long since fallen off my current necklace, but I still wear it because of what it symbolizes, personally, to me.

He didn't chose to be crucified. That was the Romans choice.

Christ already gave His spirit to the father, when He was speared.
It was mentioned in the Old Testament, they looked upon whom they pierced.

I honestly dont see why it bothers you so much. Symbols mean whatever we decide they mean. To me, my now-crossless necklace symbolizes Jesus and God, so I wear it. And there could be a cross, or a spear, or Mewtwo dangling from it, and as long as it still symbolized Jesus and God to me, I would still wear it. And there is no rhyme or reason to it other than that, and there is no point arguing against it, because it isnt about logic. I look at it and it reminds me of things that I like being reminded of, so I wear it.
