Tower of Babel

#11FlashOfLightPosted 3/3/2013 2:43:59 AM
There are a lot of reasons for it, and they are expounded on elsewhere in the Bible, but one of the points is this -

"And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:"

I could bold two specifics up there, but I'm counting on the reader to get both, this time.

Obviously, it's a story about pride.

Interestingly enough, it's rather similar to the Theory of Monogenesis in linguistics.

I don't know what religious significance the passage is supposed to have, but I always thought the story was myth intended to explain why there are different languages.

The religious significance would be the birth of "pagan" religions

"I remember the Tower of Babel - all 37 feet of it, which I suppose was impressive at the time. And when it fell they howled, "Divine Wrath!" But come on, dried dung can only be stacked so high." - Castiel, Supernatural

Remind me again WHY I haven't begun watching Supernatural yet?

Anyway, seemed to be a combination of God thinking humans were prideful, and humans getting too smart. The two seem related in the OT. After all, the tree was the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If you eat of it you will be smart like him, but God doesn't WANT you to be smart like him. You try to build big towers to reach him, he doesn't like that and confuses the crap out of them. God in Genesis doesn't seem like a god that cares much for human achievement and intelligence as much as blind obedience. Idk, just my interpretation as an atheist. Just seems strange an omniscient being who later told us to turn the other cheek gets so rattled up over people building a structure. Especially considering we probably have skyscrapers dozens of times that size now, and and even landed people on the moon.

Reading the OT now, I really get the impression it was written to intimidate people, to dumb them down, and to keep them in line.

and before anyone says "but that was ot, we're in the new covenant" there are tons, and I mean tons, of big, impressive monuments and buildings before Jesus's time.

If you still don't understand, think Nazi Germany, and what they did in a span of a mere 7 years with the insane things they built and did. They also wanted a one-world language.

Assuming this is true - and I have a sneaking suspicion it's not, or at least a gross oversimplification - that the Nazis wanted a one-world language has nothing to do with anything else they built or did. It wasn't a cause of it, and it wasn't necessarily a result of it. So I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

Wow, I cant believe you just went there. Just...wow.

Ok. Originally, according to the Bible (it's blatantly obvious this story isn't true), there was one race with one language. God split them all up because they built a tower.

The nazis, they wanted one language and one race, yes, but their solution was to kill everyone else.

I don't see how you can equate there originally being one race working together with the holocaust.

Heck, if the story of babel were true, God just indirectly caused just about every racial/ethnic conflict to ever exist, including the holocaust, and all because some dudes decided to build a tower. Tell me how that's just without relying on arguments of ignorance or circular reasoning like everyone else on this board does.
