or marry immediately?

That's how it used to be, in biblical times.

"Son, you are now a man. Here's your wife and your plot of land."

Yeah, must have been nice :\

For males.

Yes, exactly.

For males.

Why? Is being taken care of, financially and physically, not nice or something?

No, it's not nice being forced to marry a man you don't love after being sold by your father, provide sex whenever he asks and bear his children, being one of many wives for the same man, and being held to the same importance as their ox.

When you give up something besides food, it's "abstaining", not fasting.

The concept of "Romance" didn't really culturally exist. Marriage was a practical thing. You married someone, and then fell in love with them, not the other way around.

after being sold by your father

The bride-price doesn't work that way. It's a compensation given to the family to make up for the loss of her talents.

provide sex whenever he asks

This is a two way street.

1 Corinthians 7:3-5 says: "Let the husband render to [his] wife her due; but let the wife also do likewise to [her] husband. The wife does not exercise authority over her own body, but her husband does; likewise, also, the husband does not exercise authority over his own body, but his wife does. Do not be depriving each other [of it], except by mutual consent for an appointed time, that YOU may devote time to prayer and may come together again, that Satan may not keep tempting YOU for YOUR lack of self-regulation."

That doesn't sound very one-sided now does it?

and bear his children

They're HER children too, you know. Whatever made you think that they weren't?

being one of many wives for the same man

So?

and being held to the same importance as their ox.

See that verse above.

I don't remember reading anything in the bible about the man's body belonging to the ox, as well as the ox belongs to the man.

Wait, wait, wait OW, we were talking about the way things were for women back then, not women in the Bible. Two different issues entirely. Verses mean nothing for the more general discussion of how much it stunk being a woman back then.

Oh, okay.

Carry on then, but I'm of the camp that similar mindsets were followed in cultures elsewhere, and that it really wasn't that bad.

What of the boy who has just hit puberty? Should he neglect his health, or marry immediately?

So, just to respond back to this. More recent studies have suggested that sexual activity improves prostate health later in life. Not that a total lack of sexual activity leads to immediate death.

The term "neglect his health" seems a bit too strong to be used in this context.
