Wolf Blitzer's Bible Challenge #1: The 10 Commandments

#1wolf_blitzer85Posted 4/22/2013 5:31:04 AM
Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder."

Hypothetical situation:
You are out at a popular bar with your girlfriend/boyfriend. A guy approaches your significant other and starts talking to that person. You say that person is with you.
He returns a short time later and starts a verbal confrontation. Fists are thrown. He pulls out a gun and points it at you. There are other men with him, and he is intoxicated.

You try to talk your way out of it, but he won't put the gun down. It is pointed at you. He is atleast 30 pounds larger than you and standing several feet away.

Unknown to him, you have a pocket knife on you. You decide to defend yourself, and in the process the would-be assassin (the other guy) dies.

Now some questions:
1. Does this mean you are going to Hell?
2. What should you have done, since God put you in that situation?
3. Does this mean that the other guy, who did not murder you, is not going to Hell?

1) No
2) I don't see what the knife-wielder did wrong in your hypothetical. Your scenario doesn't seem to involve a murder.
3) I have no way of knowing what the would-be murderer's relationship with God is like

1) No. Hell doesn't exist.
2) God didn't put me in that situation. I did what I should have done.
3) Yes. Hell doesn't exist.

Also unless I am a ninja or Neo or something, I find it hard to believe a measly pocket knife would have prevented him from shooting me, especially considering he was already aiming at me.

This is not murder. This is a terrible question and you should feel terrible for calling it a "challenge."

I'm gonna play Christian for the moment, but...

1) Jesus said turn the other cheek. If you look at his disciples...they went to their deaths without fighting back. Jesus himself did not fight back. So I kinda get the impression fighting back is actually a sin.

2) Submitted to the gunman. Whatever happens is God's will.

3) We're all going to hell because we're all sinful.

Now, my actual opinions.

1) I don't believe in hell.

2) If you can take him and you're sure you can take him, fight back. Fighting back can be silly, because you literally brought a knife to a gun fight. Highly situational. So if you can disarm him, do it, I see nothing wrong with self defense. If you can't, or aren't sure, play it safe because going at him will only make him shoot.

3) I don't believe in hell.

Just out of curiosity, when you were actually a Christian, rather than playing Christian for the purposes of the topic, would your first three answers have been the same?

I don't need an essay, a yes or no will do.
