Doctor Who

So the husband was killed unceremoniously. Are we supposed to feel shocked or sad? Aside from that nice scene before where he forgave his wife, he was massively (heh) undeveloped. “Those things have got our scent!” They’re robots. They don’t have noses. Those flying discs things are terrible CGI. And the bit where the Doctor gets “hit” is terrible. The disc on screen is miles away from him when it “hits”. Ridiculous, they don’t even draw blood or anything. Another party member is dead. Quick, throw him off the bridge, he’s dead weight! Why does the Doctor say 1 after a load of numbers when trying to guess the number one voice command? And another party member is dead. Good work so far, Doctor (!). He just made another promise “no more”. That means one more, doesn’t it? And he just invited Astrid onto the TARDIS. Guess who the last casualty is? Go on, guess. Meanwhile, Frame has not yet bled out from his gut wound. I don’t expect it from Doctor Who, but I’m finding it hard to believe that Frame can run about closing doors and not even be screaming in pain afterwards. Oh, The Doctor is terrible at this “three questions and no more” malarkey, isn’t he? As if you waste you waste your first two questions on “Is that right?” and “Can I start again?”. For the cleverest man in the universe, Ten really doesn’t show it sometimes... Wouldn’t an EMP blast take out the lights as well as the angels? And any SOS signal, too? This villain comes across as quite Dr. Evil in his speech patterns. I’m half expecting him to say “liquid-hot mag-ma” every odd sentence. The Host are robots, they aren’t just going to stop and watch some Aussie bird on a forklift truck when they’ve just been told to kill the Doctor. This “sacrifice” is so pointlessly cruel. Mind you, what did I say about The Doctor and his promises? Right, there’s a slo-mo bit here that’s meant to make The Doctor look cool, but this is just after someone we’re meant to like has died and he’s sauntering off. This exact same problem happens in Last of the Time Lords. What is Frame’s accent meant to be? He sounds like his voice is breaking, but can’t quite do it. I know Russell Tovey isn’t a teenager here, so what the? I wonder what The Queen thought of her appearance in this episode? I mean, she’s an devoted watcher of Doctor Who (every BBC Controller has been made a knight except for Michael Grade, make of that what you will...) This sequence of making you think Astrid can be saved is just needlessly cruel. In fact the whole ending is. This is a Christmas episode, Rusty! You make it happy and jolly and all that. You don’t have the ass survive and not get their comeuppances( in fact, Rickston massively profits from it all) and the Doctor cruelly teased by fate. That’s just poor planning and writing. Rusty’s penchant for killing every minor character off in his episodes does not gel with the whole Christmas theme at all. Just leave the arc of The Doctor being a lonely god for the actual series, and just have a Christmas episode with a happy ending. In fact, I don’t think Rusty could write a happy ending to anything, could he? We had to wait for Series 5, and another lead writer, to get a happy ending to a series of New Who. Also, The Doctor says a million pounds is worth 50 million credits. The couple from before spent 5000 credits on the hotline to win the tickets and said that amount would make sure they had to work for the rest of their lives. I make it out to be 100 pounds that they spent on the hotline. How bad is the economy in the future if they have to work the rest of their lives for 100 pounds? That’s not even a week’s worth for me. What the actual hell? So the moral of this last scene is, lie on your CV, and a mysterious man will save you from the authorities and give you enough money to retire in comfort? This ending is just..no. Rusty, just...no. Post cut --- .
High Point : I quite liked the scene where Morvin tells Foon that he loves her despite the ‘massive debt’ she’s gotten them into. Even if logic rips it to shred when you think about it. Low Point : The ending. I basically explained it all a few thoughts from the end, but it annoys me that Rusty couldn’t for once write a happy ending. Especially for a Christmas episode. I don’t want to start anything by saying this, but this sort of thing is why I prefer Moffat’s episodes over Rusty’s. Hey It’s That Guy!: Quite a few. Mr Copper was Hyacinth Bucket’s long suffering husband from Keeping Up Appearances. http://images.zap2it.com/images/tv-EP00002454/keeping-up-appearances-clive-swift-1.jpg The Ship’s captain was also Admiral Roebuck from Tomorrow Never Dies. http://www.universalexports.net/Movies/Graphics/18-characters/roebuck.jpg Alonso Frame was also an alleged contender to play the Eleventh Doctor, the narrator of Doctor Who Confidential for the sixth series and finally, a werewolf in Bristol. http://www.moviespad.com/photos/russell-tovey-being-human-14970.jpg Charlene Mitchell became a waitress on a spaceship? What happened to Scott? http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/08/25/article-1048918-029781290000044D-742_224x423.jpg What I think I originally gave it: Felt a bit meh. What I give it now: It’s an average episode, not too many highs, not too many lows. There are worse ways to pass the time, but I wouldn’t exactly choose it as an episode to recommend to people. Anyway, join me next time, fellow Whovians, when we meet an old friend, enjoy a bit of mime and see how far The Doctor has come in a year’s worth of character development. All this and more in PARTNERS IN CRIME! --- If you add EvilPolarBear to your friend's list your topic list looks like half of Springfield. - Lagunathemoron
