except for the card mini-game.

That became completely dead to me the moment they added rule variations, and had them "spread". Mainly because "Random" sucks 17 horse dicks.

Nah, it's just a very, very old argument here, to the point where it's become more of a running joke than anything.

True, although they other guys bring it up more often than I do since they still foolishly think they are correct about it.

They are not.

But nothing short of voodoo magic is ever going to convince ME, whether in these topics or in any of the other topics that pop up on PotD about it from time to time, that FFVIII is anything other than the worst FF game ever made, bar none.

(though to be fair, I don't count FFXI in that reckoning because I don't actually consider it an FF game at all, and I don't count any games after FFXII because that's the point where I stopped caring about the series entirely and stopped playing new games - so I have no idea whether, say, FFXIII is great, terrible, or somewhere in-between (though I suspect it's closer to terrible))

The real problem with FFVIII and FFXIII are people looking at minor flaws and over-blowing them so far out of proportion they become blinded to anything remotely positive about the game. The linearity of FFXIII and the junction system of FFVIII does not make them bad games. There's just a large vocal group of detractors who are too close-minded and stubborn to see that.

Linearity is not even an inherently bad thing. There are tons of great linear games, it's just not what people expect and so they blow up about it.

I enjoyed the hell out of FFXIII...once it got going. Takes an agonizingly long time for that though. And by get going I mean, once the combat got interesting, not when it becoming slightly less linear.

The real problem with FF8 is that it tried to innovate so much but failed at the same time. The battle system was tedious, convoluted, dumb and broken at the same time. Want to get powerful? Then draw magic from monsters repeatably, oh you could refine items to get the spells providing that you know what you are doing. Want to use your limit break? Just put yourself in critical health, wait there is a spell for that, which you need for the junctioning. Then again if you couldn't completely understand the complexity of the system, you could always spam summon your GFs which require you to watch the long summon movies which some are cool but they get annoying soon enough to get through the game. And the story was horrible and it didn't help that the characters were irritating pieces of cardboard.

Linearity was a terrible thing in FF13, It was like FF10 but much worse, you had nothing to do but go down a linear path, battle comes up, press the same combo buttons the whole time, and continue. Hell you could probably teach your dog to play this game. The world wasn't immersive, it felt like a hallway plastered with million dollar wallpaper. And let's not get started with the story and characters, if FF8's story and characters hit your head with a bat, FF13's came in with a chainsaw, sliced your head off, and shoved it though your right eye socket.

Every time someone says this, my immediate knee-jerk reaction is to post this:

And I don't even remotely consider that a "positive" review in any way.

Oh and I completely ****ing agree with that, it's absolutely godawful game design. The very reason I gave up on Ass Creed III actually.

I just think that linearity gets tossed up a lot when it's quite literally the least of FFXIII's problems.

Well that I'll give you, but I liked the junction system. It removed the need for one of the worst aspects of all RPGs, i.e. mandatory powerleveling. Instead of hours worth of monotonous leveling, you do a few minutes of menu juggling to change junctions and you are fine.

And let's not get started with the story and characters, if FF8's story and characters hit your head with a bat, FF13's came in with a chainsaw, sliced your head off, and shoved it though your right eye socket.

Pfft. Sazh is one of the best characters in the entire series.

I don't think even Hope liked Hope, even at his best (during XIII-2 when he was grown up). Heck, one of my favorite moments in XIII-2 is when Sarah is stuck fighting copy after copy of a boss in the future, and she shouts at Hope for being an idiot. Alternatively, you can use that same moment to throw Mog at the aforementioned boss.
