I'm curious about what i make my character be. I keep reading about different professions and ways to make money. Now, I understand that I haven't played the game yet but i'm just wondering what the "final" or end results of a character would be...

Thanks to anyone who wants to describe things to me.
I'm playing as soon as I finish my new PC build.

There are no endresults for a eve character.
You have the possibility to train all the skills in the game, but there are so many you will realistically never manage to train everything on one character.

I see. So then brings my next question. Though i know that each race has got to be balanced, which races are better at what? For instance, which race's ships can take more damage, on average? Or, which race's [insert weapon type] are better than the others, on average?

Thats not really possible to answer as each race has so many different ships, and it also depends on how you setup the ships. How good the ship performs also depends on the situation, if you are solo or in a gang, what type of ships you are fighting, etc. Since you can crosstrain to any race ships, and since this is a mmorpg where balance of ships often changes it doesnt really matter what race you pick. Its got more to do with finding the ships that fit your playstyle. Its hard to explain the differences if you havent tried the game.

For clarification, in every MMO i've played (CoH, CoV, Graal, 9Dragons, WoW) I've been a tanker. So, i want to be able to take a hell of a lot of damage before dying, and still get a good load of damage on my enemy. At the same time, however, being abysmally slow is one of the drawbacks for any tanker. I'd like to try and offset this as much as possible. What's a good way to get started towards this result?

In EVE every ship needs to tank to a certain extent. Tanking works differently than the typical fantasy rpg.

Read this:
http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=319967

In addition to whats mentioned there you can "speed tank". Depending on weapon type, going fast will cause your opponent to miss a lot or you at least get reduced damage from the weapons. Another "tanking" strategy is using ewar to disable enemy weaponry .

So tanking is not as straightforward as in for instance wow. It depends on weapon type, damage type, ship size etc. And the usefulness of said tank depends on if you are doing pvp or pve and if you are alone or in a gang. How well each ship tanks is also depending on how you set it up. Its rare that you see any kind of tanking role like in wow.

The non-cap ships with the heaviest tanking potential are command ships and battleships. A good alternative for low skillpoints characters is battlecruisers.

Thank you for answering all of my questions, you're being extremely helpful. I'm reading that forum topic right now and i'm learning. Now, off to finish reading so that I can ask you some more questions about other stuff.

Again, thank you.

I'm reading a bit about Minmatar ships, and of how they are the fastest overall of the races. But, I see nothing about their armor or shielding. For example, I read that Caldari ships have, arguably, the best overall shielding of the races. Also, I read that the Amarr vessels have the best overall armor.

I seem to have trouble over what I want to do as far as my tanking...
What's smart for PvPing? I get mixed results when I look for the viability of Passive shields for PvP......and no confirmation either way for active shields and armor.

To an extent, it's possible to have decent stats in a few fields at once. For instance, I fly Amarr combat ships with armor bonuses, but I get ones with a good amount of medium slots so I can shield-tank. There are almost limitless combinations, it's not just about the ship or race, also skills and mounted equipment.

But keep in mind, you could also end up just hurting yourself by trying to be too broad. I'd suggest you take so time reading on specific ship details and find a few in the same race you like. I made the mistake of training Gallente all the way to Cruiser-class before realizing my lasers would work better mounted on Amarr ships...but now I'm into Amarr Battleships, so all I really lost is a bit of time.
