An average unusual (average hat, average effect) goes for somewhere around $100.

but it DOES have an effect gameplaywise... it makes you more visible to the enemy.

Also, some people like gambling.... so you might as well argue why do people play games where the odds are against them?

I guess the difference is if they were to pay for it, that sidesteps the gambling part and goes straight to the prize...and given some people's bad luck, they might have spent $500 in keys trying to get one on their own.

Or maybe just because they can? I actually have a restored ducati in my garage that I only look at, and I spent close to around 15,000 doing it. I've also spent 8,000 on a used hayabusa and I rarely ride the thing for the sake of not dying.

People can do whatever they want with their money, it's not the lack of sense or insanity.
