How does one amass so much metal?

#1coldfingazPosted 11/27/2011 8:33:31 AM
I've been playing for around 150 hours and I only have around 6 Ref without buying any keys. Do people really spend that much money on TF2 buying keys and whatnot?

Actually you can get it pretty much for free... well not totally free. First you get as many accounts as you can and get them all to premium ($5 each in steam wallet, buy 49 item, spend rest on game you want and gift it to main account). Then you take these accounts and use sandboxie to idle as many of them at once as you can. Wait about 10 hours, change out accounts if necessary... repeat as desired... then craft like crazy and trade the metal to your main account.. voila... you're practically printing money!* Use the refined to buy keys, sell the keys to people for whatever, then pretty soon those accounts will pay for themselves!

Or I guess you could do the risky route and just try to scam as many people in trades by looking for suckers or people who "don't care what the value of their item is" (same thing), and after investing actual time hopping around from server to server eventually you'll amass a "fortune" in metal...

The idling thing would pretty much be easier (except for the $5 per account initial outlay, though if you buy a lot of games anyway you're still only really spending 49 per account).

tl;dr buying keys is not the only way to get metal.

*Our lawyers advise us to notify you that you're not actually printing money, and if you did print money it would be illegal.

You get ~2 Reclaimed worth of random drops each week. Meaning after about a month you'll have 3 Refined from scrapping drops alone. Now ask yourself, where do those 150 hours fit in that month time frame?

Why do you need to upgrade to premium though? To trade? One of my friends is F2P and we trade stuff all the time (via Steam client).

If you're talking about idling, then yes.. to trade, and also to get more backpack space...

Otherwise, you just have to wait and use up all your drops on crafting every week...

It was my understanding that you needed to be premium to be able to trade items to others... You can receive items in a trade as a free user but not trade to others... So if you're talking about you giving your F2P buddy stuff, then yeah, that's possible. If you're talking about your F2P buddy giving YOU stuff then it's not supposed to be possible, but I've never tried it so I don't know...

I'm pretty sure you can Steam Trade if you've bought ANYTHING from Steam, not just something TF2 related. I mean, wouldn't it be kind of obnoxious if Valve let you trade things from all your games except TF2? Considering 95% of promos are TF2 related (or so it seems)? Plus that seems like it would be a dick move, saying "Yeah you can trade anything not TF2." I can't imagine people would be happy with that.

Again, according to their own FAQ
http://www.tf2.com/freetoplay/faq.php

note that it says F2P can receive only...

If they changed this, then it's news to me. I've also seen several people in game ask for stuff and when someone says "i'll trade you for a scrap" they say "i'm F2P" so unless it applies only in-game (which would be kinda stupid) I am assuming free accounts can only receive items in trades. I'll make a free account later and try it out to be sure though.

Oh and I'm not quite sure if you're talking about steam trading games and other (non TF2) stuff... but I haven't tried that. Actually I'm going to be visiting with a friend in a couple of days so I'll make sure to try to get him to trade through steam chat before I leave so I can see how much will and won't work...

You could also just hang out in trade servers and try to get a good deal from somebody. Most of the time, when somebody wants an item they don't mind overpaying a bit. That works out well for you, because you turn a profit.
