Bandwidth TF2 takes per hour?

#1DaPowahPosted 9/25/2009 12:23:09 PM
I'm thinking about buying a USB broadband modem from Sprint, because I live in back-ass country and that's all I can get. My brother looked into it and found there's a 5gb download cap per month, which made us worry about limiting what we play.

I've looked around but I can't seem to find a straight-up answer on how much bandwidth TF2 takes up, kilobytes/second or megabytes/hour, whatever. If anybody knows, or can look into it while you're playing TF2, your help would be appreciated.

Limited to 6-8 hours a day wouldn't be so bad, I can deal with playing without custom maps and such like that, too.

That cap sucks. TF2 ITSELF is around 5gb, maybe a little more.

I don't know much about bandwidth, but I'd assume TF2 wouldn't take too much besides downloading custom maps and materials, right? I could be wrong. Someone correct me if I am.

I think TF2 uses about 20-25K per second max.... so figuring 25K/Sec as the worst case scenario, that's 1.5 Megs per minute (rounded up), 87.8Megs per hour... so if you played for one hour a day every day, you'd have 2536.7 megs used, or 2.5 GB.

You could ALMOST play for 2 hours every day and probably not break your 5GB cap, and again, this is worst case scenario. How much you use depends on what's going on.... most of the time it's not using 20 or 25K/sec... I used that as a worst case figure only.

Then again, if we're talking wireless, you may not get a very good ping, and it may be erratic, and it may randomly drop you. Good luck.

Largest number I saw in several posts after searching said 20-30mb per hour.

5000 / 30 = 166 hrs 40 minutes

So in a 30 day month you could play over 5 hrs per day.

If you're getting broadband via satellite, then you may get good download speed, but crap-ass upload speed (which will basically be 56k). I understand you live in BFE and you haven't got much choice, and sometimes even the wired connections suck ass. I know a certain someone who lives in the middle of nowhere in a southern state, and the other day I was trying to send him a file and he was basically getting 56k speeds (and I have 1Mbit upload speed).

Basically, living in the middle of nowhere sucks for gaming.

5gb per month is bad.

It will prevent you from doing just about anything besides TF2 on the interwebs, downloading updates for TF2 can be quite a few megs, games on Steam are usually bigger than 5 gigs...

I dunno man... is there anything more in the 30gig range you can get?

where do you live Tc?
though yeah 5 gb is horrible for this :O

Wish there was an edit feature. Should've mentioned that although you could play TF2, 5gb a month is pathetic.

If you actually wanted to download anything (and TF2 requires a large update) then you're done for the month, which is ridiculous.

Also: is the cap 5 GB (Gigabytes) or 5 gb (Gigabits)?
