Well. Here's a few tips that I think are quite suitable for beginners.

1. Fast weapon switch
This is quite important. Not just for beginners, but for all users. Fast weapon switch makes you able to switch your weapon by scrolling, instead of clicking the number, which is really hard when changing your weapon while walking.

2. Auto-reload
It is recommended that you turn on auto-reload.

3. Controls & Sensitivity
Change the controls and sensitivity that suits you. Don't listen to others.

4. Classes
From my experience, I find that starting with Medic is a better choice because you can observe how other people play while you can play too. But if you want to observe better, then why not join spectate? After Medic, you start to get a bit of experience, you may jump to playing as soldier, which is a good over-all class. He has a great fire-power, but poor speed. So advance players will use a kill called rocket jumping, which is not the first thing you want to learn about. After soldier, you might want to start jumping to sniper (if you play alot of FPS games like Battlefield or Call of Duty) or Pyro. Then you might want to play around with other classes, such as Scout, Heavy, Engineer and Demoman. Never play spy when you first start TF2. Even though it's an excellent class, can deal alot of damage, but it's an easy-to-die class.

That's pretty much it. Have fun playing TF2.

Wow... This is really awesome IceMage! Thank you so much for putting in so much time and effort into helping some of us newer folks out! I just started playing this game...and boy it's hard--for me personally--to get used to the whole keyboard and mouse dealio coming from only playing a Wii, now transitioning to PC games! Awesome and thanks again!

Fun spy trick when dealing with engineers:
1: Crouch behind their dispenser opposite their sentry gun,
2: When the sentry targets you, it will have to shoot through the dispenser first.
3: If the engineer is 'turtling,' than his own sentry will lacerate his model every which way with bullets. (I.E. Kill him.)
4: Cloak just before the dispenser is destroyed, giving you time to disguise and sap that sentry.
5: Profit.

The "Kill engineer with sentry" tactic might take a bit too long, but it's so satisfying to see the engineer fail to react :D
