Emulation question: saved states, "random seeds," and stealing.

Hi folks,

So I just discovered how glorious this game can look on a modern PC (using PCSX2...wow), and yes, before you jump down my throat, I do own a PS2 and a legit copy of the game (ripped the image off my disc). Obviously I'm starting fresh because my old save is on my PS2 memory card (and after years away, I wanted to replay from the start anyhow).

My old save was a "completionist" run, so I had just about every piece of gear you could want. One thing stands out: farming the effing Salamand Entites to steal the Gnoma Halcyon or whatever for the Arcturus to show up in the bazaar. Took ... wait for it... FOR-EV-ER (with Thief's Cuffs), and that is not an experience I'm looking to relive.

SO, now I've justified my ignoble pursuit, to the matter at hand: does anyone know how exactly the "seeds" are generated as far as what a monster has to steal is concerned? I did a bit of experimenting with the emulator: saved the state, stole from an enemy, reloaded the state to see if stealing would yield a different item. Seems to me that not only does the item remain the same, but the exact success and failure of attempts is also predetermined in the seed. In other words, reloading the state the whole exchange went exactly the same: three failures to steal followed by a successful steal that yields a Water Stone, or what have you.

***Can anyone confirm that what the enemy is holding is determined as soon as your party enters a zone? I'd like to steal the Halcyon from the Entite again this run, but if I could just run a bunch of steals in a row as opposed to running away, zoning out, zoning back in, etc., it'd be a hell of a lot less tedious. And yeah, it'd be cheating I suppose, but I already got it the legit way and it was a HUGE hassle, so myeehh.

Thanks, folks.

as far as steal is concerned the drop can be manipulated using a cure list (regardless of emu or console AFAIK).... same goes for chest spawns/drops....

pain in the arse if you want my opinion - i can't think of a single necessary or particularly useful steal

if you don't want to bother with that then at least save states speed things up

if you do the look it up on google - there are a few lists floating about

(edited)
Salamand Entites drop Salamand Halcyons, and you get one for completing the July sidequest. I found farming the Gnoma Halcyon fairly painless (before beating Earth Tyrant of course) - this is the one you need for Ultima Blade.

You can start July quest after Raithwall, but can't finish it until Archades.

EDIT I know this doesn't really help you with the main question you had, but since you specifically mentioned this drop, I thought I'd offer a very easy way to get it.

unless you get salamand halcyon at earliest opportunity there is no point building arcturus IMO

infact, only in my boss points only LLG did i find the arcturus really useful (read game breaking)

Just a friendly heads-up Gamefaqs have a policy against discussing illegal emulators, don't want to get banned :)

I know. Unfortunately didn't find out about that version until I was well into this playthrough :/ I'll revisit it in a few years and rock that version; could use a change of pace. Does the English version still have the same voiceovers during cutscenes and all?

Yes, the voices are English, the text is Japanese. However, there's a patch that translates everything into English and it's almost perfect (a few Kanji remain here and there, but it's almost unnoticable).
