Secret map in Design Maps mode

In the main menu go to Design Maps and press A and then quickly press and hold the L and R buttons.

It will show a strange map with mountain ranges surrounded by forests and plains surrounding the forests. There is some ocean area in the southwest and northeast corners of the map.

The mountain groups appear to be shaped like Japanese Kanji.
Could someone here translate them?

If I recall correctly, it simply says "Advance Wars". Not sure though as my knowledge of the Japanese language is rather limited.

I checked a Japanese dictionary and the characters in the map do not look like the characters for "advance" or "war".

The mountains must mean something else.

Incidentally you can also get to this map in Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising using the same method.

My second guess is Nintendo, which is apparently correct.

Ha, my TCRF article got linked.

Yeah. In Advance Wars 1 and 2, it displays a "Nintendo" map.

In Dual Strike it displays a 'Famicom Wars DS' map in Japanese versions and an 'Advance Wars' map in the English versions.
