what does the yellow or red map location dots mean?

i'm trying to complete this game and am wondering where all the exits are. i'm at about 60 now. are the colored dots some clue?

Red dots mean that the area has two exits instead of one. It opens alternate paths to other levels that you must complete. Keys count as an alternate exit. If you find a key in any level, it has a red dot.

To get credit for all 96 goals, you must get all exits for every course. Bowsers castle does not count.

Also, some Ghost Houses have multiple goals. Fortresses and Castles do not, though.

The bigger mystery is why some of the dots are bigger than the others. Don't think anyone's ever figured that one out.

I think the bigger the dot, the longer the level.

Nah, I checked out the large dots with Mario Mania. Those levels don't seem unusually long.
