the "split personality" mage (a challenge quest)
Chaos and the Warmech have both been beaten by Team Punchity Wrath, so it's time for something new. I call this quest The "Split Personality" Mage. Here are the rules.
1. This quest will involve four red mages. Each one will have access to one (and only one) aspect of a red mage's capabilities.
2. The four mages in this quest shall be as follows:
2a. Arm-this red mage can equip armor. He can also use the run command. He may do nothing else.
2b. Weap-this red mage can equip weapons. He is the only mage who can attack physically. He may equip a spellcasting weapon but cannot use its spellcasting ability. He may do nothing else.
2c. Wite-this red mage can learn and use white magic. He may also possess and use (but not equip) spellcasting items that cast white magic spells. He may do nothing else.
2d. Blak-this red mage can learn and use black magic. He may also possess and use (but not equip) spellcasting items that cast black magic spells. He may do nothing else.
3. Only one mage may act in any given turn. The others must wave around an ineffective item.
4. If a mage dies, that mage's abilities are lost until that mage is revived.
5. On the off chance that I ever decide to use a potion in battle, any mage may do that, but it will be the team's move for the round.
6. All items (buyable or findable) are legal to be acquired and used by the mage allowed to use them. Class change will be attained.

Levelled the team up to level 2 on Imps and other Conerian enemies.

I'm guessing so. (It only really makes dungeon looting more easier.)

Beege wasn't someone doing this challenge months ago, even managing to reach the ToFR at level 12 before their save data got erased by an untimely press of load state?

silktail, I'm assuming you're asking about using the mages as backpacks to hold looted items from dungeons to sell back? I guess beyond the obligatory one useless item they have to possess in order to do nothing in rounds I didn't actually say anything on that subject. It won't matter until at least the Marsh Cave. The only real difference would be how much grinding I'd have to do for money, so I'll go ahead and say that, since they already can anyway for the purpose of doing nothing in rounds, anybody can hold anything they want to hold but they can't use anything they aren't allowed to use.
One other thing I forgot to mention. I'm not stat-maxing anything. Only things that would even make any sense to try to stat-max would be vitality on everybody and strength on Weap, but I like a challenge, so I'm not going to do that.
Went to the Temple of Fiends to loot the Cap. On the way out, I encountered the one battle I'd hit in the temple: four Zombies. Weap fell shortly after the first Zombie, and I didn't think I'd get lucky enough for three kills on three FIRE charges from Blak, so I chose to have Arm try to run instead. It took many rounds longer than I thought it would, but the three did escape the battle, albeit with everybody in single digits for HP. Wite only had one CURE charge left since I had tried to keep Weap alive, so he used it on Arm so Arm could run back to Coneria.
The first battle outside the temple was a single Wolf, so Blak killed it with a LIT. The second battle was against four Imps, so Arm tried to run. It took four rounds, so, by the time he escaped, Wite and Blak were dead and Arm was down to 4 hit points. In that condition, he limped into Coneria with only 56 gold to his name. That wasn't enough to revive someone and stay at the inn, so, after some thought, I sold the Cap that I had just looted in order to revive Weap and stay at the inn for the two of them. It meant a loss of one absorb until Elfland, but at least the quest could continue. An early lesson in not trying to move too fast. The two of them fought long enough to get the 110 gold necessary to revive the other two and get another inn stay before I quit for the time being.
If you're wondering why I didn't just purposely suicide and try again to get the Cap, I like to avoid full-party deaths whenever possible. Oh, and no level-ups took place.
One other note: in an effort to avoid Weap dying like that in the future, I've switched him and Blak around. Blak's level 1 attack spells aren't that much more powerful than Weap's physicals and Blak only has three charges of them, so I figure he's more expendable than Weap at the moment. I may change things around again when hit-all spells start coming into play.
