Haven't played in a year so I was wondering how they stand right now?

PVE aff and destro and up there on the DPS charts

PVP on the other hand... Aff is commonly the only viable spec, and to be successful in PVP you need to know how to play flawlessly, one mistake and its off to the graveyard :|

Great in pve, three viable specs. IMO bad in pvp with 1 good spec being affliction.

PVE:

Affliction and Destro are both solid in PVE. the difference is about 300 DPS with BIS on stand still fights. your own gear /ability/ raid comp is going to change that more then the spec you choose.

Demo is still amazing in AOE but other wise your better off going aff or destro and using demo as a sub spec

compared to other classes mages, hunters and Spriests can do better.

PVP:

Affliction is the only spec worth using now. Demo and Destro are to hurt by dispels which all healers have and the interrupts which all melee have.

Affliction is best in large scale PVP where they can spread Dots to multiple targets and use there CC to apply massive pressure to a healer with the burst and single target damage from there partner(warriors/ frost DKs for example)

if your looking for major Killing blows locks are not good for that. They are great at doing a large amount of AOE damage to multiple targets and CCing healers and setting up other classes that can do an overwhelming burst to finish a target.

That is really depending on the fight, and even with the recent dot nerfs to spriests they still wreck locks.

The 12% dot nerf they received is still a third of the dot nerfs locks received ever since 4.0.1

Well that's good to hear. I was afraid they would be average in PVE. Do they really out dps SPriests?

A very well played Aff lock can. Locks have a higher skill requirement than other classes and to top DPS against some of the other mentioned classes you need to play the lock pretty much perfectly. You can do still do respectable DPS though if you can't get the class down perfect but you won't be beating some of the more notable DPS classes.

Do they really out dps SPriests?

Depends on the player, but overall, no.

For instance, I out DPS the warlock in our group, and he's fantastic. I've just been playing shadow priest since BC, so I know my class incredibly well.

PLEASE stop quoting state of DPS.

1) it doesn't purge numbers from past patches so if a class was OP and then nerfed it can remain on the chart for ever.

for example Affliction was really good in 4.1 but now in 4.2 there is a 30 second cool down on soul swap, therefore its damage has gone down but because it was doing really well last patch it will be a while before the averages reflect that.

2) New gear is now available so some classes may scale differently and therefore effect numbers

3) Most people have moved on to fire lands and any new logs are going to focus on the newer bosses and not older ones.
