Did someone say ...

Thunderfury, blessed blade of the windseeker. Is this a meme or something? I've seen it around various places, in some weird contexts. Where does this phrase come from ?

It's a Legendary item you could only get from doing a very convoluted quest line involving raids and such, all from the Vanilla/Classic era of the game. It used to be damn hard to do, but I have no idea about now.

I know what thunderfury is, but where does the "did someone say..." phrase come in??

Ah, I had no idea that's what you meant. My mistake. As for that, I have never heard this meme, so I couldn't tell you.

Honestly, I don't think anyone knows. However, the fact that it was one of the first legendary items (if not the first, not sure), meant that originally it was a status symbol and was probably linked as a form of bragging, but eventually this turn got latched onto by "trolls" who used it to spam.

NOTE: Above is conjecture and is not intended as fact, unless of course it is right, in which case it is fact and does not need to be intended as such.

The point of the meme is to just to keep spamming the name of the sword, but instead of just the sword and making hardcore spam they add stuff like "did someone say..." or "nobody said..." " Im pretty sure I heard..." to make it more subtle spam. Something like that anyways.

Also the reason they use that sword is because the name is obnoxiously long so they want to clutter you chat with multiple long orange lines of text.

Yeah, this was being spammed repeatedly in trade in SW last night on Muradin. Like ps2man said, its because the name of the item is so long and obnoxious in its orange text. People were also getting very excited that the name of a weapon had punctuation in it.

The first legendary was a neck piece that dropped in molten core. Blizz removed it from the game after it dropped but let the person who got the piece keep it.
