Xfire numbers for wow

#31flairePosted 11/23/2012 3:12:03 AM
what is the point of xfire numbers when bliz regularly releases the sub numbers?

undeniably, subs are up since panda came out

undeniably, sub numbers since panda came out have refuted the projections of every hater

vast majority of players never use xfire. While there may be a reduction in xfire usage to watch WoW that could mean many things - such as players were bored waiting for panda to come out and so they were watching xfire.

Because all WoW players use xfire.

Hell, I would say that more than 90% of WoW players DON'T use Xfire...

You should go ahead an point out what was wrong with that sentence. I'm interested to know why you decided to pop in just to insult someone who posted a fully legible and understandable post.

You should at least insult someone who is using horrible grammar or misspelling words left and right.

What? You're saying I should rather insult someone for something as trivial as grammar, instead of a lack of basic understanding of statistics? And why do you even assume I was talking about their sentence structure?

Anyway, this is what's wrong with their posts:

XFire users are good samples when you're talking about popularity of a game.

XFire users are good samples when you're talking about popularity of a game.

...No, no they aren't.

Xfire is what's called a "self selecting sample". This is problematic when trying to extrapolate data into the whole:

I think I used Xfire for about 10 minutes back in 2004.

Somehow, I doubt your initial post is accurate.

1. My server had login queues when the expansion was released, which is evidence that there were more, not fewer, players after the patch. We didn't have any queues for Cataclysm's launch, which means we have more players than we did two years ago.

2. My server is noticeably busier since the patch (and not CRZ crowding; actual on-server activity.) Note that this is on an RP server, which doesn't tend to feel a between-patch lull as sharply as PvE servers do.

3. Seriously, who uses xFire? I don't know anyone, personally, who does.

Where did you get those % of users for both games and their xfire? I really want to know. Xfire is idiotic. It doesn't prove anything. You coming up with %'s like those with no proof is almost as bad as Xeeh trolling GW2 and Mrplanktom trolling these boards.

I took estimated sales data/subscriber data and divided the total number of xfire users for each game by the estimate.

I used 10 million for WoW because that is what the last official number released was. I used 3 million for GW2 because the last official number I saw was 2 million and I wanted to highball it.

6300 xfire users played WoW. 6,300/10,000,000

I did mess up some on the math for GW2

I used 14,000 for users, actual number on xfire is only 4000
It should be 4000/3,000,000 = 0.001333~%

So how does that change what you said above?

You seemingly came to an epiphany in the post before this one...

Now, not so much?

Why?

It doesn't change anything.

99.99937% of WoW users don't use Xfire. (Subtract the percentage above of WoW players who do from 100%.)
99.99937% is greater than 90%. Therefore my statement that more than 90% of WoW users don't use Xfire is correct.

I think my education level is fine.
