Fire vs Frost (PvE)

#1SeptimusNeonPosted 12/9/2012 6:48:05 AM
I am currently level 88 and doing random instances. It seems like I'm doing way more DPS with Frost than with Fire.

Is this how it works now or am I just terrible with Fire?

Fire just got the nerf bat shoved up its ass. I hear tales most mages are going Arcane/Frost.

One day dude, I'm just gonna get off the bus, and I'm gonna run in the woods and never come back, and when I come back I'm gonna be the knife master!

I reluctantly made the switch from fire to arcane. Sadly I have noticed a great DPS increase, and I haven't even learned it all that well yet. I say sadly because I've been fire forever, and love it. The day it is viable again I'm switching back. I tried hard keeping up but my DPS was just way too dependent on RNG as fire. Pyro procs are way too inconsistent now.

Fire is better, frost is near the bottom. You're not supposed to switch to fire till you get gear though, 480 ilevel would be a good start. Level as frost and ignore the baddies who say arcane, they probably don't know how to play fire. Fire was nerfed, arcane was buffed, but fire was so over the top powerful, now it's just regular op.

I am picking Wind Lord for the simple fact that the reason Fire was so OP due to its ability to push out so much AoE with Combust.

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-zy3a15836th6vi1o/analyze/dd/source/?s=3127&e=3549

This is right before the nerf to Combust and Critical Mass were put into place. If you notice the mage Monkeydluffy is fire on this fight and has a DPS of a little over 180k. The other mage in this comparison is Thepinkmeow, who had around 169k, also fire.

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-e0f6wbhptge2nhd2/analyze/dd/source/?s=9371&e=9761

This is from this week, after said nerfs were put into place. Thepinkmeow went Arcane for this fight and ended the fight with over 190k DPS. Monkeydluffy stayed fire for this fight (his two specs were Fire and Frost) and pulled.... 136k DPS. Now, even with Fire being kind of luck base, you can't sit there and tell me that a Mage will drop an almost 45k difference in a week and say that Fire is even "just regular op", especially with the jump the other mage went going from Fire to Arcane. If anything, the damage on the 2nd week should be HIGHER because of the shorter fight, thus less time spent after the initial burst down of the mobs.

Here is another comparison, using Garalon as an example, which is mostly a single target fight minus some cleave off the legs (especially since they changed how cleave works on that fight):

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-zy3a15836th6vi1o/analyze/dd/source/?s=2335&e=2728

Monkey is at 108k DPS here, from last week before the nerfs. Thepink is sitting at 84k DPS.

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/rt-e0f6wbhptge2nhd2/analyze/dd/source/?s=8117&e=8476

This is from this week again after nerfs, and you see Thepink as Arcane doing 100k+, Now we see Monkey doing 88k as Fire, a difference of 20k DPS from the last week.

Both examples show a Mage who was near the top of the charts, and then after nerfs was sitting fairly low on the meters. And I'll tell you this right now, Monkey is an INCREDIBLE mage in our guild, and is extremely competent in his class. Those types of drops in DPS are insane, even if you consider RNG screwing into the picture, and even worse when you consider any sort of upgrades from the previous week into this one. And while Pink is not quite as good, he is still a fairly competent mage in his own right, and you will notice what kind of DPS increase was in store for him after going to Arcane this week over Fire.

Sadly I have no other logs from when he was Fire both weeks as he was mostly testing Frost, but you get the picture.

So, I'll say it again. Hey look, someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
