It was too fast (possibly made things unfair for world PvP? Yes, PvP "ruining" more things), though I'm pretty sure GC tweeted about the reduction being way too much.

Is there really a good reason for most anything Blizzard does? As walrus stated, it was probably because of World PvP, especially since this expansion is kinda focused on PvP.

It's not supposed to be. Like has been said, the reason for the nerf was because it felt like there was even less of an incentive to stay alive. In older MMOs death had much bigger penalties (loss of experience or gear) and WoW has always been very forgiving. You just lose a little bit of gold in the form of repair costs and some time in the form of a corpse run. Cataclysm made the corpse runs a lot more forgiving too with flying graveyard mounts and repositioning/adding graveyards to be more convenient (eliminating the horrid five minute BRD ghost run, for example), and with the guild perk on top of that death wound up taking just seconds to get out of. Mists is perhaps catering to the Hardcores a little more by bringing the time cost of death back closer to where it used to be.
