it's only a matter of time until we can fight gyms for badges and then enter a tournament.

They tweak and make changes all the time. Probably something bigger next expansion, but who knows.

Well, the new ones (X + Y) are to be quite different, visually. Gameplay, no idea. But visually they're to be orgasmic.

Personalities, Abilities, The physcial/special split where the moves themselves determine if it's physical or not instead of the type.

it's a glorified mini game you can do for no real excellent personal benefit. About all I've seen them do with it so far is add more pets & trainers, along with some tweaks to certain abilities that are truly dominating (like Reflection).

I highly doubt you'll find something like pet battle raids or anything (though I'm just waiting for them to include pet battles in a raid mechanic of some kind).

They're tweaking the really OP skills (like Reflection and Supercharge) and the really OP pets (Fluxfire and Bigglesworth) to make them less dominant.

They're also adding special elite battle pets, which as they've been described sound like special 3v1 fights against extremely strong pets in the wild.

Blizzard has made it clear, though, that they want Pet Battles to remain a casual for-funsies minigame and not a super-fleshed-out, well balanced means of progression because

1. they'd have to devote a lot of time and resources to the system, potentially at the expense of other content

2. there have been enough nerd aneurysms over Pokemon in WoW already, they probably want to avoid looking too invested in the system and pissing off the "anything that isn't heroic raids doesn't deserve to be in the game" crowd any further.
