What spec are you? What is also your PvP Power/Defense and what spec/class is your friend?

He is a rogue / ret paladin.

Is it correct to start out by getting all dreadful gear?

In most seasons you don't want to step into an arena until you have full PvP gear, excluding weapons.

This is because most starting teams are also in full gear. They are hitting you with almost full power while are hitting them with an extra 10% reduction in damage, at least.

PvP Power also changed Arenas as well. As a mage your obviously going to want to stay away from them so don't gem for Res, gem for PvP power.

For fighting Paladins, rooting is not your best option. I Play as Arena Ret. and destroy Mages because they use all of their CDs trying to keep me rooted but can't. what sucks about this more for Mages is we can Freedom twice and use Emancipate (instant movement impairing remover with no CD) so keeping us movement reduced/rooted isnt going to happen.
For Paladins, stick to a pillar and WAIT for him to pop Wings, then just kite him around the pillar until it wears off. If there are no pillars then use Invis, Ice Block or Sheep him. Keeping him Sheeped until Immunity is ideal (if you want have the other player on you) b.c it will waste about 12/25 seconds Wings. We only have 1 stun unless we he has specced into Repentance, but you will be unstunned as soon as he hits you so save your blink for his 5 or 6 sec. stun, then blink out if it. Paladins are a burst class, so if you can get past that 20 second burst you'll be good for a short while. Also learn what you can Spellsteal from us. Being healed for 3% health every successful so Spellsteal is a bad thing.

Also learn how to fake cast, tricking people into interrupting you, wasting their interrupt and casting freely is great.

If a Priest isn't a bad comp to go with for healing purposes, even if they are Shadow, as they can Life Swap a Mirror Image for a full heal, plus the instant 30% heal they get. The Fears will also play a big part for keeping them off you.

Resilience is too good to pass up. Every competent player gems full resilience because the damage reduction is too good.

For example, 5% resilience is 12,5% damage reduction.

12,5% damage reduction when going from 60% to 65% resil for example. I made a mistake there since resilience does DR itself. All in all, resil is the best stat.

I do fine geming for Power. I did some studying and found that, from Tournament players, Power scaled a lot faster than Res..

If he's in 2s and kiting correctly he shouldn't get hit that often. If he's in 3s he will have a healer to cover him
