What happens if someone buys gold for a character that isn't theirs?

Saw some people in guild chat saying how they got a ninja banned by buying gold for his character.

Is this a thing? Can you really get banned if someone else buys gold for your character?

You don't get banned even buying gold for your own character. That's a myth. They ban the person who sold the gold, not the person who made the purchase.

With that said, within the game there's no way of course for Blizzard to know who bought the gold, just that it's being exchanged between this character and that character. Still wouldn't get banned for it.

they take away the gold, give it to the auctioneer's. then a gm teleports the player to gm island into a interrogation room giving em the lecture that gold buying is bad. then banned for a few days.
They literally gave him the keys to the kingdom and he pissed it all away--dragonballer88

Same thing that happens when you buy gold for yourself.
