how long does it take to get from lvl 1 to max?

My opinion: it depends on how you play, and what you want from the game...I enjoyed leveling with friends and guildies, and I did NOT find it to be a single player game at any point unless I wanted it to be.

It sounds like you aren't really interested in leveling, just getting to 90 as fast as possible. If this is your first toon, I do not recommend that approach. There is a LOT to be seen and discovered in WoW. Now, I'm not saying you need to be a lore junkie or that you MUST play the way I do (which is basically "no stone unturned"). But I would suggest you take your time and explore the game a bit. Take the time to learn your class (or multiple classes - my main is a rogue, and its only been in the past few years that I've discovered that I enjoy tanking too). Now, while you might pick a class that lets you fill any of the raid/dungeon roles (tank, dps, heals) - what happens if you pick a warlock and discover you enjoy melee better - or that you did pick a monk, but you healed all the way to 90...now you want to tank, but you don't have the practice or the gear? I do recommend you play with the dungeon finder when you hit level 15, get a feel for dungeons and how your class and role handle them. A good guild will also help with tips and suggestions for new players.

So, I say don't rush, take a couple weeks or even months to dabble with different races and classes, and explore the game. Even if you don't care about the lore, pop culture references, easter eggs, or whatever - taking the time to learn to play your chosen class will take you much further than a speed level will. For example: I ran a dungeon (briefly) with a feral druid. I was healing and he was taking a TON of damage. I inspected him, and discovered that he was wearing NO helmet, NO shoulders, CLOTH robe, and I believe a white weapon (either a 2h mace or a staff I think it was). When I asked him if he'd forgotten to put on his tank set, he had no idea what I meant. He thought his gear "looked cool" and "druid-y" - never mind that you don't see that in bear form anyway. All 3 dps left the group right then, for some odd reason. How he leveled that far I'll never know...

Took me I think three months to hit 60 back in Vanilla.
