In case the people here don't keep up with the official forums, here's a link to some info. http://forums.warpportal.com/index.php?/topic/79298-pre-renewal-server/ Pretty interesting, huh? Can't wait to see how it'll turn out. --- Yellonde - Ghetsis(Priest) Ranboob(Cannon Trooper) Marstorius(Demon Slayer)
It'll fail, quite miserably for several reasons: 1) Kafra items will still be allowed in the game, ruining any chance of a sound economy, and destroying the chance for anyone not capable or willing to purchase kafra items to have any real purchasing power without serious savy, patience, and the ability to keep up with market shifts when they happen. 2) The same team is running it. The team that has failed since the servers went "gold" 8 years ago. The same team that negotiated s**** contracts that allow Gravity in Japan to dictate virtually all terms. The same team without a PR department. Same team that organized to kick out hundreds, perhaps thousands of players from various regions and perma-banning their accounts as new servers were coming online in those respective regions. I cannot tell you how many borrowed equipment was lost, and how poorly they handled retrieving it. The same team who botched the server's several years back after data was corrupted. Failed to have a credible backup...or actually any backup at all, and rather than rewrite the game from scratch, they attempted to rewrite partial programs and code, and use the same files that were originally there, causing all sorts of errors. Ever notice that the position bug is very different now than it was about 4 years ago? It was far more accurate back then. Not to mention a lot of skill and card errors because resulting files were likely incorrectly written....bad call signs, poor file integration. The same team with high end servers and a lagier game than most private servers, even compared to private servers running on less than 1/10th the bandwidth, yet similar player counts? Same team leader who, in that very post sounds off as though iRO is doing "well", yet it's been bleeding off players even before the balance patch. Same team that nerfs even beyond kRO, often to the point where said skills become utterly useless? Same team that has fudged up nearly every skill implementation as calculations are NOT correct for well over 2/3rds, and therefor no stat calc is remotely accurate in guessing real damage as they use the actual formulas as written...unlike the game code. Same team that's too lazy to even bother fixing it, yet seems to love talking about how hard they work and how much they do for the server. Poor Hiem (wait, let me throw up). 3) Built off the same s**** rehashed, half-baked, fixed game code that is so laden with bugs early Eathena models look like glistening code perfection by comparison. Expect all the same bugs, all the same errors, all the same issues with skills, damage, cards, etc. that forced them to go Renewal in the first place. It's interesting, but not entirely unexpected. They're looking at private servers. The most popular of which, and running on 3 years now, remains a trans only server, no 3rd, level 99. I'm sure they keep track of those. They're easy enough to find. Should be interesting to watch another failed server of my favourite online game. Hiem is too delusional and lacking in both business sense and work ethic to actually make it work. Sure he works hard and often, but his team obviously doesn't. Bad leader choice. He should've just been a coder/debugger and an actual manager with vision, understanding, experience with MMO, good leadership skills, and a solid grasp of how code works running the show. --- Campaign for PT in US: http://oprainfall.blogspot.com/ ==> Two down, one to go. Rant finished, I'll probably try it out anyway. Sounds like the server build is custom and probably has been worked on for some time if it's actually stable, unlike the old chaos/loki just before renewal. The one saving grace is no eden. Eden destroyed the game. I just hope they put back all the old monster/item repeatable quests, or it's going to be a very very long grind. --- Campaign for PT in US: http://oprainfall.blogspot.com/ ==> Two down, one to go. Heim said they are putting in something similar to Eden, it just cant be eden specifically as thats unique to renewal. What about eden ruined the game anyway? I love the gear rewards from eden quests. Its much friendlier to new and returning players as its ridiculously difficult to progress from scratch using only shop sold gear. Turn ins are abysmal though and I hope they wont be a part of this server. I agree that the kafra shop ruins the economy as well as the general gameplay experience. Wish they could go back to a subscription based model but given the low number of players these days that will never happen so we're stuck with kafra shop + vip.
So what is the point of weapon and armour shops now? Eden obliterated their usefulness. The bonuses you get from eden gear are also better than most dropped weapons, and the vast majority of cards. The new eden gear is even worse. If you're going to do something like eden, you have to upgrade all dropped gear to compensate, all cards, and all shop gear to make them worthy purchases, or they're just dead weight on the game. It completely destroys balance. Just because something is nice and useful doesn't mean it's balanced and actually good for the game. Nothing about Eden gears is. It just breaks the early game to speed it up to such a point that only 3rd class is worthwhile. Then again the mechanics for renewal destroyed the value of % cards unless you've a level 3-4 weapon with at least 2 slots (well technically the mechanics for some % cards were broken pre-renewal....but maybe fixed with this build?). Why do you think turn-ins are abysmal? Gather enough items and just turn them all in for a huge reward. Or is it the exp value per turn in is so small comparatively...even though they're reduced in renewal, the new exp system does grant them a higher %, but at least you have item turn-ins in the old system that go all the way from 1 to 99, unlike Eden's system which I think is piss poor quest implementation (you have to go to different people sometimes to turn it in, and sometimes all over the world?...what?, at least 85+ and Gramps are simple enough). --- Campaign for PT in US: http://oprainfall.blogspot.com/ ==> Two down, one to go. When were the weapons and armor from shops relevant to begin with? I never leveled using those, before eden I bought cheap carded stuff from other players as that was far superior. Id be fine with shop gear getting a buff and eden being gone. I just wouldnt want to start from scratch having only the current shop gear to get me through the early game. And given the low drop rate of cards (in a bot free economy), its unrealistic to expect new players to rely on those either. Ideally, Id want stronger shop gear, slightly increased card drop rates, and zero bots...seeing as thats unlikely to occur some form of eden is an acceptable alternative to me. I think 1st/2nd classes not being worthwhile has more to do with the 150 cap and power of 3rd skills than eden. Eden gets you there faster but who would want to spend months leveling 1st/trans when they're useless for end game content. As far as turn ins, I was referring to gramps as it completely dwarfs other methods of xping rendering a great deal of content obsolete.
When I first started out, there was no possible way I could afford "cheap carded stuff" from other players, and this was the case for the first three years of the game. It was better to buy a claymore (I started when Izlude was still selling them in the weapon shop), Tsurugi, or Damascus. Save up, then buy +7 level 2 weapons, then cards. As well even if you could find cheap carded weapons towards the end of those three years, they weren't as good as a +5 level 3 from a shop. Or the carded weapons were so scarce and new player infusion was high enough that there wasn't much on the market, so by the time a new player had enough it was gone. That or when you're mid road and still not making quite enough money, but you want to start a new character, it was just easier. Monk? Stunner is better than a +7 quad-wolf carded Mace, or +6 tri-wolf carded chain, and usually cheaper. Not sure when you started, but I remember vividly what it was like on chaos of old. Hell even starting out on a new private server with 10x rates, a population that's been there for 1-2 years, and a healthy economy, I still found it useful to go to a shop and buy what I needed early on for those first few toons I made. That's if the economy will be bot free. Bots, based on how they function, if it becomes like Chaos/Loki 6 years ago, or Ygg and Valk of today, will have millions to sell within a week. Nevermind they still haven't solidified when the server is going up, and whether Ygg will be absorbed into it (unlikely they'll pick Ymir or Valk). If they do decide to absorb Ygg, from what they said, items, zenny, god gears will all transfer. So we'll see how solid the economy will be based on their final decision (guessing Heim's final decision, but I don't know how the GM team works as a group, and what level of input and at what point k and jRO have a say). Oh, I agree with you on gramps. That method is so broken everyone just plays around it and WOE. "I don't have any reset stones...but I don't feel like leveling, not enough exp, so I'll sit in town for the next 8 hours, or I'll leave". Maybe with the 150 cap. Though the game mechanics are changed so radically, and flee/hit rates on monsters have had already 2 spikes since renewal. One small one back a month after renewal, and that huge increase with the unbalance patch that attached nearly double damage to every enemy past level 80. Really makes those gramps TI parties almost a requirement now. Not much fun when my Champ was owning Anubis pre-patch, and now just dies too bloody quickly. If I ever return and get him to Sura...much easier then. Only like 8 levels left or so. --- Campaign for PT in US: http://oprainfall.blogspot.com/ ==> Two down, one to go. From: ignasia7 | #007 Nevermind they still haven't solidified when the server is going up, and whether Ygg will be absorbed into it (unlikely they'll pick Ymir or Valk). If they do decide to absorb Ygg, from what they said, items, zenny, god gears will all transfer. This was never the plan at all. They were going to merge Ygg into Valk/Ymir, with Ygg players using an NPC in Eden to decide which server their account(s) were transferred to, the default being Valk if a player didn't vote on one or the other. They would then make Yggdrasil into the pre-renewal server. Ygg players were not okay with this at all and complained until they decided to make a fourth server instead of merging. So for now there is no planned merge, and if there is, it won't be to the new server. The GMs have already stated that it's impossible to transfer TO the pre-re server, but that it may be possible to transfer FROM it at a later date. --- http://i572.photobucket.com/albums/ss166/track022/stuff/deal.png
The first time I played was way back in 03 or 04 (on Loki)...then I took frequent breaks coming back for a few months at a time. I never really relied on shop gear as I tended to make money via buying and selling till I could afford the most basic carded gear which was costly of course but not prohibitively so considering the proliferation of bots. I wouldnt have the patience to slowly grind my way through content for years using shop gear. I remember it taking about an hour on turtle island to gain 1% xp from 98-99 on my rogue using an endowed ice pick. Then when I returned for renewal and discovered gramps, I became spoiled and couldnt ever go back to solo grinding the old fashioned way. In fact, the last time I quit was shortly after they implemented the 1 reset stone limit per day (did they change that or is that still in?) for gramps as just doing 2 turn ins a day wasnt enough to keep me playing and I couldnt bring myself to solo anymore. That and I absolutely hated the balance patch changes.
Hizeme posted... From: ignasia7 | #007Nevermind they still haven't solidified when the server is going up, and whether Ygg will be absorbed into it (unlikely they'll pick Ymir or Valk). I only read Heim's first post and it wasn't very clear on that. --- Campaign for PT in US: http://oprainfall.blogspot.com/ ==> Two down, one to go. PSO2 = Sexy Awesome Beast of a Game! |
