[Q101] How scary is this game?

Very scary. Yes, I know it's a vague answer, but the question is just silly, so what do you expect me to say? Silent Hill games don't have as many jump scares as the (classic) Resident Evil games have. Instead, Silent Hill is all about atmosphere and anticipation. For the most time you'll be wandering through pitch black corridors with your flashlight barely illuminating things. Your radio emits static when there's a monster nearby, so you can technically hear the monsters before you see them. Picture this and then you'll have an idea of how scary this game is.

[Q102] Do I have to play the earlier games before Silent Hill 3?

You should play the first Silent Hill game before part 3. The story of the third installment is a direct continuation to SH1's story. If you play them in reverse order some things that happen in the first game will be spoiled.

Though you can skip Silent Hill 2. The second game has a stand-alone plot and isn't necessary to understand Silent Hill 3. Actually you can also play Silent Hill 4 first, as it also has nothing to do with SH3. Same goes for Silent Hill: Origins, though this one might spoil things for the first game.

But if you play SH2 first and use the same memory card for SH3 you will get some funny bonus stuff.

[Q103] How long is this game?

If you like to explore and check every corner, then your first run can take 12 - 15 hours. If you just want to rush through the whole game you might be finished in 6 - 9 hours.

[Q104] What difficulty levels are there?

At first there are Easy, Normal and Hard for the gameplay itself and Easy, Normal and Hard for the riddles (yes, the riddles have their own difficulties). Apparantly there's a Beginner mode which can be unlocked by dying a couple of times on Normal. Once you've finished Hard mode you will get Extreme 1. Completing Extreme 1 unlocks Extreme 2. It goes all the way up to the 10th Extreme level which is called Extreme X.

One more thing: Heather can fall into holes in this game, but it won't happen on Easy and Beginner.

And for those who've played Silent Hill 2: No, there's no Extra riddle mode, sorry.

[Q105] Should I buy or rent this game?

If you've already played and enjoyed the earlier Silent Hills and the classic Resident Evils then you will surely like Silent Hill 3 as well. Though if you prefer jump scares over atmosphere or if you simply are not sure, then just rent it.

[Q106] Do all copies of the game come with the soundtrack?

Only the US copies, sorry. Also, this game is out of print in the US and the copies which are sold on eBay don't necessarily have the soundtrack.

[Q107] Where else can I find the soundtrack?

Try eBay. Or if you can get over ripping off an artist like Akira Yamaoka then search the internet for the mp3s. No, I won't help you on this, pirate.

[Q108] So there's an offical music video?

Oh, you mean the one with Heather singing "You're Not Here"?. The one that looks something like this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu_rfkegD5E&feature=related

No, sorry, I never heard about it. *whistles and slowly walks away*

[Q109] Where can I find the "Making Of"?

Watch it here (includes SPOILERS):

[Q201] Tell me something about the weapons.

Okay, these are the weapons you can find in the game:

MELEE WEAPONS:

Knife: Easily the most uneffective weapon in the game. Go ahead and use it if you want a challenge. Actually it's easy to use, but since it doesn't do much damage and has a short range I wouldn't recommend using it.

Steel pipe: Ah, the classic Silent Hill weapon. Easy to use, moderate damage. You will find better melee weapons later on, but until then go ahead and use the steel pipe.

Maul: A quite powerful melee weapon, but it's difficult to use, because it's heavy. Though the damage makes up for it.

Katana: Everybody's favorite melee weapon. Easy to use, deals a lot of damage (though not as much as the maul). Once you've picked it up it should be your weapon of choice throughout the rest of the game. I recommend saving the ammo for the firearms for tougher situations and boss fights, so stick with the katana.

Stun gun: Actually you could consider it a firearm, because you need "ammo" to use it, in this case batteries. And yes, it's very powerful.

Take note that you can do different attacks with melee weapons. To get into attack stance you'll always have to hold R2. Now for the different attacks either press X once, or hold X, or hold X and press the left analog stick up. Whenever you pick up a new melee weapon you should practice for a while.

Also, you can block attacks by hold R2 and square.

FIREARMS:

First off let me tell you that this game doesn't give you a lot of ammo. Stick to your melee weapons as much as you can and only switch to firearms when you are either fighting a boss or when you are low on health items. If you are surrounded by monsters, don't bother fighting them and just run.

Handgun: One clip holds 10 bullets. Since you are a gamer I don't think I have to say a lot about handguns, do I? Take note that your handgun will be empty when you find it, but there's ammo nearby in the same room.

Shotgun: Holds up to 6 shells at once. Best used against multiple enemies. Quite powerful when you let the enemy come closer before shooting.

Submachine gun: One clip holds 30 bullets. But I recommend saving the ammo for bosses since clips for this weapon are EXTREMELY rare. Obviously a single bullet isn't all that powerful, but since it's fully automatic it doesn't matter anyway.

UNLOCKABLE WEAPONS:

Submachine gun with unlimited ammo: The name says it all.

Beam saber: Star Wars, anyone? Quite powerful and easy to use. If you get a 10 Stars rank the beam saber will get an upgrade, doubling it's length.

Flamethrower: Ugh, not really impressive, but like the beam saber it can be upgraded by obtaining a 10 Stars rank. Then it'll have a better range.

Gold & silver pipes: Well, they're just like the steel pipe. The only difference is that they are made of gold and silver.

Heather Beam/Sexy Beam: To use the beams you have to unequip your weapon. Each beam has two differnt attacks, hold R2 and press X once for one attack and hold both R2 and X for the other one. To use the Sexy Beam you have to euqip the Princess Heart costume. Note that using the beams will deplete Heather's stamina which in turn will weaken the power of the beams. Don't worry, this isn't MGS3. Just let her rest for a few seconds to recover stamina.

[Q202] Tell me something about the supplies.

Apart from the ammo there are three kinds of health items and one kind of... beef jerky?

Beef jerky: Place it on the ground to distract enemies (though it doesn't work all the time). Like the porn magazine in the MGS games the enemies will run over to the beef jerky and you can sneak past them... or kill them if you want.

Health drinks: Recovers life. Quite a lot of life considering it's the "weakest" health item.

First Aid Kit: Recovers even more life. But considering its rarity you should only use it when you suffered a lot of damage.

Ampoules: Completely recovers life. Though this item is very rare. But the good thing is that an ampoule will also keep your stamina at the maximum level for some time. The best time to use it is when you suffered an aweful lot of damage and are surrounded by enemies. Use an ampoule and make your getaway.

[Q203] Apart from the weapons are there more permanent items which I should pick up?

Yes, there are.

Flashlight: You don't want to play this game without the flashlight, so make sure to find it. It's in the otherworld mall in a storeroom on the 1st floor. Check the northern corridor for accessable doors. Once you're in the room examine the lightswitch on the wall and turn it off. Now you can see the flashlight.

Radio: It emits static when there's a monster nearby, so make sure to pick it up. You can find it in the elevator of the mall (a short cutscene will introduce it).

Pendant: Heather starts with this item. There's one point in the game where you'll have to use it.

Bullet-proof vest: Reduces damage (duh), but since it's heavy it will slow you down. You can find it in the clothing store of the otherworld mall, 1st floor.

Silencer: Can be equipped with the handgun and the submachine gun. You can find it inside a wall in the construction site building (I'll get back to it).

#6NINFanboy(Topic Creator)Posted 5/2/2008 4:23:44 AMmessage detail
Perfume: Attracts enemies. No really, it does. If you wonder why you should even use it, then let me tell you that you can unlock a specific ending by killing a certain amount of enemies. But even then it's not really necessary to equip the perfume, especially when you like to sneak up on enemies by turning off the flashlight. You don't really need the perfume to run into a lot of monsters. If you wonder why this item is in the game in the first place: welcome to the Silent Hill universe. SH2 and SH4 also have "bad" items. Anyway, the perfume can be found in the women's locker room on the 2nd floor of the "normal" hospital.

And finally: the maps. They are not really necessary, but they make things easier. Whenever you enter a new building/stage make sure to check everything until you've found the map.

[Q204] Is there something else I should know about the combat?

Yes. Whenever a monster falls to the ground run up to it and press X to deliver the final blow. Otherwise the monster will rise again.

In your inventory screen you can "equip" supplies. When you press R3 (push the right analog stick in) you'll automatically use that supply without having to switch to the inventory screen.

When you turn off your flashlight the enemies can't see you.

[Q205] No Health and Stamina bars?

You have to unlock them first by completing Hard action mode and Hard riddle mode. Until then you'll have to go into the menu screen and check Heather's picture. When the pic is flickering, then she suffered some damage. When the pic is red she suffered a lot of damage. You can also tell if she's hurt when the controller constantly vibrates.

As for stamina you'll just have to watch Heather. If she slows down she needs a break, so stop running. She will take a couple of deep breaths to replenish her stamina. Alternately you can just go through a door; it's some kind of a glitch/trick to replenish her stamina.

[Q206] Is there some way to tell if there's a monster, an item or an accessable door nearby?

When Heather turns her head there's something nearby. Once you've picked up the radio it will emit static whenever a monster is close. Don't worry, you can't really miss the radio.

[Q301] Hey, I already have a bunch of weapons!

Keep on playing.

[Q302] Where can I find the knife?

In your inventory.

[Q303] Where can I find the handgun?

You'll get it in a cutscene, so you can't miss it. Note that it's empty though. There's ammo in the same room, so look for it. But don't go all trigger-happy on the enemies. Save your ammo, since this game relies a lot on melee weapons combat.

[Q304] Where can I find the steel pipe?

In the otherworld version of the mall. Go to the 2nd floor of the mall. There's a cafe called Turn Mill. It's in there. To get there you need the Cooked Key first.

[Q305] Where can I find the shotgun?

Subway platform 2, there's a present box inside the train. Examine it.

[Q306] Where can I find the maul?

Underpass. In the same room where you find the underpass map. It's a room which you MUST visit to progress, and there are no monsters in this room. So whenever you come to a save room in the underpass take a look around.

[Q307] Where can I find the katana?

"Normal" version of the office building. Fifth floor, check all the doors in the east corridor.

[Q308] Where can I find the stun gun?

In Heather's room.

[Q309] Where can I find the submachine gun?

Basement of the "normal" hospital. Ammo is rare, so save it for later. Go to the roof of the hospital to find more ammo.

[Q310] I haven't read Shakespeare!

I guess you're on Hard riddle mode. On Easy and Normal just put the books onto the shelf and arrange them so that you can read the code. Note that the code is random and sometimes some digits are hard to make out. Trial and error time.

However on Hard you have to know what all those Shakespeare books are about, how many main characters there are, and according to the piece of paper next to the lock on the door you have to do some math as well. Anyway, on Hard riddle mode the solution is always 8352.

[Q311] Heather suddenly got really slow!

Either she's out of stamina (in which case just let her rest for a few seconds) or you have the bullet-proof vest equipped which is very heavy and will slow her down.

[Q312] What was that on this TV?

I told you to play SH1 first, didn't I? Anyway, you can see the same clip in the first game in another mall.

Later on you can see another video clip from SH1. And there are tons of other references. Now you wish you would have played SH1 first, don't you?

[Q313] This floating, spinning monster with the blades is pretty tough...

You must be talking about the Pendulums. Yes, they are tough. Don't bother killing them. Whenever you see a Pendulum in this game just run. It takes too long to kill one of them and chances are that you will receive more damage than you deal yourself. Besides, Pendulums are never alone; there are always more monsters around. Really, just leave them alone and run.

[Q314] How do I kill the first boss?

I hope you saved your ammo. Wait until the Split Worm... errr opens its split thingy to reveal its "face" and shoot it (or run up to the side of the face and whack it with the steel pipe if you're out of ammo). When the Split Worm disappears into a hole, then get into attack stance (R2) and hold L2 to make Heather face the hole it's gonna come out of next. If you're out of ammo and can't seem to beat the boss with melee weapons, then consider restarting.

[Q315] Something just pushed me onto the rails.

Well, climb back up!

Anyway, that "something" seems to be a ghost. The ghost will never appear again for the rest of the game, so don't worry. Actually the ghost will only push you from the platform after reading the notes regarding the suicide and the hauntings.

[Q316] There's a door in the subway tunnel, but I don't want to jump onto the tracks to check it out.

I'm afraid you'll have to. Don't worry, there's enough time to check it out before the next train can run you over. :)

[Q317] How do I kill the monster in the water?

First you'll have to find the hairdryer. Then go into the room where the monster is. Check the wall for an outlet and use the hairdryer.

[Q318] I remember you saying something about a silencer.

Construction site. Go up to the 5th floor and into the large room with the hole in the ground. Check the walls for a part that looks different. Examine it and Heather will give you a clue. Punch the wall with a melee weapon a few times.

[Q319] What's "The Black Cat"?

A short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The protagonist's wife's corpse gets walled in in this story.

[Q320] How do I kill the monster which is blocking the exit?

Not with your weapons, so save your ammo. In the building there are pages of a fairy tale. Find the pages with the end of the tale and that should do it. Weird way to kill a monster, I know.

[Q321] How do I kill the second boss?

This boss is called the Missionary. Note that the Missionary can block shots from the front, so attack it from the side or from the back. You will notice that the boss loves to run around aimlessly, so try to attack it from the side/back whenever you get the opportunity to do so. Once it falls down, run up to it to kick it a few times. It will stand up again, so continue what you've been doing so far and eventually the monster will die.

[Q322] So about Heather's father...

(major) SPOILERS ALERT!!!

Yes, that was Harry from the first game. Sad, isn't it?

END OF SPOILERS

[Q323] Now that I'm finally in Silent Hill which places can I visit?

Just the motel, the hospital and the Heaven's Night strip club (unfortunately the girls don't seem to be there).

[Q324] Any survival tips for Silent Hill?

Unequip the bullet-proof vest and run. Don't bother fighting the monsters. And check the map to make sure you take the correct turns.

[Q325] What's the code for the door in the 2nd floor of the hospital?

Easy riddle mode: 4639

Normal riddle mode: 8634

Hard riddle mode: 4896

[Q326] What's the combination for the briefcase?

Easy and Normal riddle modes: Check the clock. On Normal remember that it's a four digit code, so up to 9:59 you'll have to start with a 0.

Hard riddle mode: Check the clock and add 1200.

[Q327] The combination on the photograph seems to be wrong...

No, it isn't. Sometimes the digits are difficult to make out.

[Q328] Oh man, another riddle! So about the crematorium...

Easy riddle mode: There's no puzzle here, so leave me alone!

Normal riddle mode: Okay, the roman numbers represent the stretchers and the order in which you'll have to input the digits. Check the numbers of the stretchers which are marked with the roman numbers.

Hard riddle mode: 9271

[Q329] How do I kill the third boss?

That would be Leonard. This bottle isn't all that difficult, so there's no point in wasting the submachine gun ammo. Instead equip the shotgun (or the handgun, because like I said this battle isn't hard). Shoot Leonard a few times until he disappears into the water. Stay away from him to avoid getting knocked over. And don't waste ammo by shooting him when he's underwater - you can't hurt him until he stands up again. Once he reappears coninute to fire at will. When he falls over and starts twitching you can run up to him and kick him. If you're out of ammo, equip the katana or the steel pipe and attack him from behind.

[Q330] Where's the amusement park map?

There's no map for the amusement park. You'll have to rely on your sense of orientation for a while, so don't smoke pot or get drunk while you're in the amusement park.

[Q331] The ceiling in the Haunted Mansion crushes me! Help!

This only happens in Hard mode and the Extreme modes. To avoid getting killed hold down R2; Heather will duck a little bit in the attack stance.

[Q332] Now the red light is killing me! Help!

To survive the red light chase unequip the bullet-proof vest and any heavy weapons.

If this still doesn't help go into the options menu, press R1 to enter the extra options page and set the controls to 2D. Now you'll just have to hold the left analog stick down for the most part, though at some points you'll have to press up according to the camera angle. But still, it's easier to survive this part with the 2D settings.

And if you could still need a little boost consider wasting an ampoule since it will keep your stamina at the maximum level for some time.

[Q333] Uh, carousel puzzle?

Kill the moving horses. And stay away from their breaths.

[Q334] How do I kill the fourth boss?

That's Memory of Alessa. This battle has four phases and in each one she'll have a new weapon.

Phase 1: Knife
Phase 2: Handgun
Phase 3: Steel pipe
Phase 4: Submachine gun

And note that she can block your attacks. It's like fighting your own shadow, isn't it? Anyway, since she can block it's a good idea to use the katana for this fight. When Memory of Alessa is equipped with a firearm get closer to her to make her try and slap you with the weapon rather than shooting. If you've got the right distance you're close enough so she won't shoot and still far enough away to avoid getting slapped. Since the katana has a decent range you'll still hit her. If you're having trouble finding the right distance to her, then just stay close to her to make this fight pure melee combat and remember to block when she attacks.

[Q335] Who's the woman in the confession booth?

It's never revealed. Some say it's Claudia, others say it's a certain character from the first game. Well, no one knows.

[Q336] I'm in the confession booth and I have to make a choice! What's the correct answer?

There's no correct answer. Your response will affect your ending. Actually it doesn't mean that your answer WILL get you a certain ending; it just HELPS getting it. There are more requirements for the endings. Check the endings section for details.

[Q337] Alright, I'm in the church, I've checked everything, but it seems there's nowhere to go to next!

There should be a hallway with a painting and an invisible girl. Check the footsteps of the girl and once she disappears check the painting.

[Q338] I'm still in the church and AGAIN there's nowhere to go to next!

*sigh* Find the other hallway with the invisible girl, go to a spot where the camera angle changes and look out for her footsteps. Examine the wall after she disappeared.

[Q339] I've only got five tarot cards. Where are the others?

There are only five cards.

[Q340] What's the solution to the tarot card puzzle?

Okay, so these are the slots on the door:

- 1 - 2 - 3 -
- 4 - 5 - 6 -
- 7 - 8 - 9 -

Easy riddle mode:

1 - Fool
3 - Moon
5 - Eye of the night
7 - Hanged man
9 - High Priestess

Normal riddle mode:

1 - Eye of the night
3 - Moon
4 - High Priestess
6 - Fool
8 - Hanged man

Hard riddle mode:

1 - High Priestess
2 - Eye of the night
