They make it damn near impossible to see anything, but there are rain and blood splatters on the screen, which are cool but arguably make it even harder to see anything. What was the point? Why needlessly hamper visibility when it obviously makes more sense to have them off? Why didn't any other games have the "trails" option?
Are you playing on PS3? I think the trails are useless if you're playing the version from the PS Store or just playing the game from the disc on a backwards compatible PS3. Some people liked the trails when playing on the PS2, but I hated them and hate them even more on the PS3.
What ARE trails, anyways? I never could figure it out, besides that they're glowy things that make things harder to see and hurt my eyes.
Its a light filtering effect, which in this game creates a dragging of an image. If you look at pedestrians in this game you will notice how you see a trail of their body as you move the camera or go past them.
It creates a "trailing" effect. It may come off as blurry for some but it also makes the game bright as well, creating a humid heat-wave style of graphics. I personally liked the effect and got used to it.
