if i put defensive casting (on) do i get less mage exp because its going into defence?

If you want to raise your defense than train combat. If you want to raise your mage than train mage.

all i would like to know is if i activate it, my mage exp decreases so that defence exp increases

If you put your attack style to defensive, you get .1 point experience in magic and .1 point experience in defence for every damage point you inflict.

In every combat situation in runescape, increasing your experience gain to one skill via damage dealt directly decreases experience gain to another skill by an equal amount.
