That's the common way of getting it, the way you're supposed to see it the first time. However, you will get the same ending if you beat Lavos in the Ocean Palace so that he never actually kills Crono, whether you're in new game+ or not. But to do that on the first run-through is the real trick in this game. --- "Don't just beat it, conquer it!" - dungeonconquerorB |

Generally because the doors of doom will probably wipe out your party in one hit because there's not much you can do to raise your magic defense at that point. The attacks from Ocean Palace Lavos first form can be survived with good armor and a moderately high level(like, 40)
I guess that's where the green dream comes in I can't remember much of it myself, as I've never tried it, but when it was first done a long time ago, the green dream and life 3 were essential. --- Common sense is just wisdom with its sleeves rolled up |
big_kakePosted 8/18/2012 2:04:27 AM | *Shameless Advertisment here* I've updated my LLG FAQ to include a strategy for a LL party to beat him a NG+ (It's 100% impossible without the equipments from later)
That much said though I can point out a few things that will help most parties overcome him.
Lavos has 16 (**) speed and does the following attack pattern: Destruction Rains (Physical) Chaotic Zone (Magical) Needles (Physical) Repeat
How much damage these attacks do depend upon your stats, but Destruction Rains will most certainly be the heaviest hitter here, and Needles will do most damage against a single character. You'll want to boost your Physical Def as much as possible.
You have: The Safe Helm Vigil Hats Gold Erng Silver Erng Aeon Suits Green Dream Shields
Available on a first playthrough, which you should be able to shuffle around to survive all his attacks provided your party is in the 30-40's. There are Six Speed Speed tabs IIRC available before then. Your best bet I think is using Crono Ayla and Frog, who have the highest natural Speeds, and using Speed Tabs to get them roughly equal. You can charm unlimited Lapis and Barriers in here and also but Full Tonics I think, you should have plenty of Elixirs too, rely on those to heal. Your best place to revive is probably after the Chaotic Zone, you'll need status protection, hence the vigil hats.
Also, if you are really struggling for turns you can give Crono the Slasher (+2 speed) and designate him a healer only, you can even give him a rage band.
Best of Luck! Hope I helped |
HeartfangPosted 8/19/2012 8:32:51 AM | I think you're better off using chrono frog marle and having access to life 3. As your strategy seems to require a new game +. --- Common sense is just wisdom with its sleeves rolled up |
big_kakePosted 8/19/2012 1:38:36 PM | All those items I stated are available before facing Lavos in Ocean Palace.
And what is Life 3? |

And what is Life 3? A Final Fantasy spell later renamed Auto-Life. It makes the target revive autoimatically when they're killed, like the GreenDream. |
big_kakePosted 8/20/2012 2:04:39 AM | Surely you'd need Robo instead of Frog for that though?
If your Marle can survive all the attacks (except maybe his needles) and is fast enough then I don't see why not, however be aware that Marle only has 8 speed though and will be 2-Turned everytime by Lavos if she doesn't have Haste or isn't pumped with Speed Tabs |
HeartfangPosted 8/22/2012 11:46:22 AM | Sorry I forgot the specific combination of characters for the triple, as it's completely useless in any other situation.
Your strategy requires a new game plus as you've said. --- Common sense is just wisdom with its sleeves rolled up |
