Play Frontier again, even on Windows 7!

Download and install Frontier.

Download and install a program called "D-Fend Reloaded" I personally downloaded the portable version so I could carry it around with me on a flash drive.

Follow the instructions of D-Fend reloaded and point it towards Frontier (I copied frontier to my flash drive and pointed D-fend at the frontier folder.

Now, when I load D-Fend Reloaded, I have a frontier Elite 2 entry and to run it, I just double click on it. Sure every computer I have tried it on, it's not full screen, but sound works and frontier in 37" glory might look a little blocky.

My uk version of frontier might be a little buggy and it crashes once in a while (twice in a whole week of hard gaming) but it is still a LOT less often than on windows 98 or XP.

This, once set up properly, is easier to run than dosbox and the sound works unlike my experiences with dosbox.

Thanks to D-Fend Reloaded, my memories of Frontier are now being relived!

There's also the Pioneer Space Sim project (basically a project to bring Frontier modern graphics - it's still a work in progress), and the OpenGL version of Frontier : Elite 2, while Frontier : First Encounters has the JJFFE executable that works in ALL versions of Windows I've ever tried.

Feel free to join us on the First Encounters board - you can chat away with us there.

From the looks of it, D-Fend is still DOSbox, but it's simply a graphical front-end for it, rather being adjusted by command-lines.

correct, but it is easier to use than trying to remember to mount a drive and folder etc.

Heh. I'll not disagree with you there, but I learned how to use PCs in DOS, so I'm perfectly comfortable in the DOSbox environment.

That's funny, so have I, I remember windows' word processor - "write" and having to type commands for simple text stuff like bold or italics. I ain't affraid of dos, but for many people, including new players looking for the high detail and quality of frontier, d-fend simplifies the process that you or I learnt how to REALLY use computers.
