The full Kamagutchi is a bad time to try.

Recruit when there is only one enemy demon on the field.

You can't recruit bosses (I haven't, anyway).

The Labrynth of Amala is full of demons you cannot recruit. It's the area, not the species.

You cannot recruit Elementals.

Some Demons can learn Charisma. I got it on my Raja Naga, for example. It increases recruitment success rate.

Brainwash skill, first available from Holy Shiisaa at lvl 15, gives you a very high chance of success when used on a demon 10 or more levels below the level of the demon with Brainwash. Really useful.

Late game, you can pick up Deity Mithra (lvl 78). At level 79 he learns Death Pact, which has a high success rate on all recruitable demons. It was what I used to help complete my Compendium first Cycle.

Recruit a Power, you can then pass Brainwash on to every other demon you fuse from it from that point on. I use a Michael with Brainwash as my main recruiting demon.

Brainwash is the best way to recruit demons, period.

I just got to the underground area of Ginza I think it is, I've successfully recruited one monster since this topic started. Is there any good ones in that are, I got that little begger, can't remember it's name, but I'm always getting him to beg for stuff.

Am I close to that brainwash monster?

Shiisaa (Base Lv 13) learns Brainwash.
Power (Base Lv 33) starts with it.
