I played this game years ago and got right to the Abyss and couldn't figure out how to get in. I've decided to try it again. I hope someone can help answer a few questions:

Does increasing your attributes make the characters better?
Is there any reason to meditate for 3 cycles instead of 1?
How long do you have to wait to meditate again?
Does it depend on the number of cycles?

Actually, that's all I can think of right now but I'm sure to have more soon.

Thanks

Does increasing your attributes make the characters better?

Yes, but the effect is less noticeable than the effect of good equipment. It's still worth it, though, if only for the stat boosts that help reduce your misses in ranged combat and the chances of spell effects succeeding.

Is there any reason to meditate for 3 cycles instead of 1?

Well, if you meditate at a shrine before you are worthy of Avatarhood in that shrine's virtue, you'll instead receive hints and information about the virtue. Each cycle offers a different tip about how to increase it or actions that will decrease it and thus should be avoided. They can come in handy for new players especially, though even veterans may find the advice helpful.

How long do you have to wait to meditate again? Does it depend on the number of cycles?

I'm unsure as to exactly how long you need to wait, but it is cycle-dependent. Meditating for one cycle is not as exhausting as three cycles, so in just a couple of minutes, you'll be able to re-enter the shrine and meditate again. Three cycles is a bit longer, but not egregiously so. I've never really timed the "lock out", so to speak, so I don't have anything more specific.

Good questions. I forgot all about the meditation part of the game actually.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll have more questions later.

Anyone know what the 3 messages for each shrine is? Wonder if anyone has written them down.

I think almost 99% of the time Im ready to get avatar from each shrine, so that I never have the chance to know what each hint is.

Especially Valour and Humility, by the time you get the boat you should easily be avatarish in each of those..

Maybe another reason to start a game now and start going nuts with the skull.. :)

That reminds me. Is it possible to use the skull and still become the avatar?
What happens if you lose virtue after you become an Avatar? Can you still use the sword and Armor?

Resting in the inn seems to remove the exhaustion problem.

As stated elsewehere, the sword/armor are still usable if you lose avatarhood.

Despite what some rumormogners say, it's still possible to [re]avatarize after using the skull; it simply damages your progress in every virtue.

Yeah, the skull just puts a significant dent in each of your virtues. I can't remember the exact penalty, but it's severe enough that using the skull will require you to spend substantial time atoning for it.
