What I like about WW: The graphics. First off, I never really did like the idea behind TP, It tried for a more "realistic and dark" look and failed if you ask me. Wind Waker, however, has such a charm. One of the few games that pulls of cel-shaded graphics with such beauty. Many complain that's it cartoony or childish, but never look at the fact that the game could easily be dark if it needs to be. Ganondorf, in the final fight, was actually a pretty scary guy. Especially before talking of how death ravaged his land and, in my opinion, finally snapping after losing his chance at the wish. Even with such "cartoony" graphics they pulled that off pretty nicely. The effects were done nicely too. The water falling back into the castle as the king's wish was granted. Just added to the overall ambience of the scene. The gameplay. Let me start off by saying the game is so easy to get into. I find that If I play one game or type of game for too long, I become too accustomed to those controls. Playing another game, I have to get used to the different controls. Not for WW. I was able to pick it up and immediately start playing with no trouble at all. I don't even think I had to look at the control menu to see the controls. Everything flowed nicely. As for the actual gameplay...Great. Sure, most of the game it's traditional Zelda gameplay but that's not bad. I loved the introduction of the sailing. Unlike others, it doesn't bother me. The final two dungons were great as well. Using the other characters as tools to overcome the challenges was pretty cool. The story. I cant say the story is the best, as it's just another rescue the princess story only replace princess with sister for about 2/3s of the game. However, I do have one good thing to say about it, it introduced the best Ganondorf in Zelda history. One who didn't so much care for raw power as he did for escaping form the hell that was his birthplace. I haven't played the game in a long time so I need some time before I can give better evaluations. --- http://www.wearyourbeer.com/images/Green_Lantern_Emblem_Dark_Green_Shirt.jpg
Counterpoints Graphics: My only argument is that TPs graphics work just fine. People call them realistic, but they're so stylized they end up cartoony in a different way. They fit the game's tone well. I won't argue against WW's style though. Gameplay: I'm going to echo everyone's complaint here, it's too easy, it's too short. 5 dungeons not counting Ganon because that dungeon is never very much like the others. The only reason the game lasts as long as it does is because everything takes 3 times longer than it should. Sailing between islands is long and pointless, the triforce hunt is awful etc. The too easy thing. Let's put it this way. The first 2 dungeons are dead easy, nothing particularly complicated about them, the 3rd dungeon is pretty good, 4th and 5th are good but the partner thing starts to wear out its welcome by then. Then the triforce hunt, then Ganon. there are only 3 dungeons that aren't busy trying to ease the player into the game. That's unacceptable. The story is pretty good and the series seems to be trending toward more interesting stories. Passable, but not enough to redeem the faults of the gameplay. --- It happens whenever Shakespeare loudly mentions how he loves Pop Tarts and then later he eats a bunch of Pop Tarts- T-Rex explains Checkhov's gun
I have to agree with it being short but I like short.I felt 6 dungeons was the right amount. Not too many and not to little. Don't think I have a short attention span but after 8-9 dungeons I start to get bored. It would have nice to have maybe one more but 6 was still pretty nice. I hate the triforce hunt as much as everyone else but a beautiful game can have some flaws and still be great. Besides, I didn't completely hate it. I liked the idea of searching for stuff on the vast ocean. What bothered me was having to find then maps, then paying that ridiculous sum, and THEN finding the pieces. The game wasn't so short for me. I think, on my first playthrough, it took about 30 or so hours. That's because I took my time doing the countless sidequests. Regarding easiness, that did not bother me. TP, WW, OoT, and even ALttP were all ridiculously easy to me. The only thing difficult in any of them were the dungeons. Even then the dungeons weren't that hard. The only real challenge I've ever had in a LoZ was against a Dark Nut or Iron Knuckle. Those guys can be tough on your first time through. Speaking of difficulty, I just got out of the Amala Network in Nocturne and this game has yet to be as hard as others described. It's still incredibly enjoyable because the combat is great but I've only come close to dying once. --- http://www.wearyourbeer.com/images/Green_Lantern_Emblem_Dark_Green_Shirt.jpg
Have you fought the Matador yet? That's usually a sticking point. I'll type up a rebuttal when I'm feeling less out of it. --- It happens whenever Shakespeare loudly mentions how he loves Pop Tarts and then later he eats a bunch of Pop Tarts- T-Rex explains Checkhov's gun
Nope. Not yet, right now, I've got to find a way into Loki's room. Speaking of Loki, he and Odin are Kaneko's worst designs. Everytime I look at Loki I can't help but think of Dragon Ball. --- http://www.wearyourbeer.com/images/Green_Lantern_Emblem_Dark_Green_Shirt.jpg
Okay, I died. Damn Matador. To be fair, I think I need new demons. These below level 10 things aren't working. --- http://www.wearyourbeer.com/images/Green_Lantern_Emblem_Dark_Green_Shirt.jpg
I beat Matador on the third try. Sukunda really helps against that damn Red Capote. I actually beat the Mantra Trial in one go. I thought Thor would kill me right off. I even beat the greatest Fiend in one try. I stopped there at 11 hours. --- http://www.wearyourbeer.com/images/Green_Lantern_Emblem_Dark_Green_Shirt.jpg
Daisoujou you sneaky bastard. He likes to trick you into thinking he's easy. However, once he hits 50% health or something BAM! He spams Prayer and Preach. Ugh... --- http://www.wearyourbeer.com/images/Green_Lantern_Emblem_Dark_Green_Shirt.jpg
