Just Finished, But I Have Some Questions (Spoilers)

#1ZenicReveriePosted 2/13/2012 5:29:29 PM
So, I just beat Phantasy Star without using a guide (although I had to have someone tell me I didn't search everywhere with the Ice Digger to find the Laerma Tree), and it was tough. I'm actually planning to finish all console RPGs in US release date order, and this was the first game that came up that I could play (I don't have Miracle Warriors). Its final dungeon nearly killed my enthusiasm for actually finishing it. Up to that point, I hadn't needed to make full maps; only a few notes & wall hugging got me through all other mazes.

Anyway, for those that have played the heck out of it, I had some small questions that weren't answered in the FAQs:

There's a building in Gothic to the left of the church that's empty. If you go inside the menu will come up. Is there anything you can do in this building?

In the prison is someone who mentions having a friend in Bortevo that I should visit; however, the only two people in Bortevo make no mention of a friend in prison, nor are they that friendly. Am I missing something from this hint?

Is there a point in giving Cola to the man in Sopia? I only gave him two (all I had), but he just said the same pointless thing. Does he say anything different if you keep giving him more?

Did anyone figure out that the Trap spell disarmed pits without referring to the instruction manual or a guide? If so, how? I mean, is there mention of it in the game somewhere. I was lucky enough to find a copy of the manual on-line, and have it hinted that it wasn't just for trapped chests.

Congrats, though I don't envy your project. That sounds like a lot of work.

In order, to the best of my knowledge:

- I don't think there is anything there.
- There's no dialogue pointing back to the guy In the prison
- Nothing more to this either
- I didn't think about the Trap spell doing this until later, probably after my 10th playthrough, to be honest. Well done!

I no longer have my manual but I thought that the spell section listed the trap spell as disarming traps, period.
I've always assumed that you could use it for both.

No disrespect Kin Kan Korn but how did you go 10 full playthroughs without disarming pit traps? I may have not completely mapped Baya Malay but I thought that I needed to disarm that pit near the top.

Also did you get all the Items without it?

I mapped as I went, so I learned to avoid the traps in floors and find other routes. I don't believe there were any traps in the floor that required you to disarm to make it to the other side as the only possible path to progress.

The manual does not mention floor traps, but makes a vague reference to perhaps a second use beyond chests:

"Allows you to disarm traps in treasure chests and dungeons."

Yes, it was that vague message combined with the hint that Gauron Morgue had an armor on the far side of a pit that finally sparked the idea that I could disarm the pit traps.

I believe I got most items (although I missed just about every secret door, and areas across pits), except for aforementioned armor (I believe it's the Laconian one since I didn't manage to get that) due to my realization coming to me at Baya Malay, I don't think I missed anything big. I didn't feel like trekking back just for an upgrade to armor or to explore the other side of all pit traps.

Baya Malay did require disarming a pit trap to reach the top, the only one you need to do that to in the whole game.

Thanks for the answers Kin Korn Karn. Those are in line with what I thought. I actually tried out the Cola guy last night, gave him 5 drinks with no change.

Also, not asked, but I re-fought Dark Falz to find out what the story is if I choose no at the end, and it wasn't anything exciting (actually kind of humdrum); however, Alis did die during the final battle (it was pretty close, with Odin getting the last hit, being the only one left alive, and at 65 HP... maybe he could have survived another hit, but maybe not), and there's extra dialogue where Nero's spirit returns to say a few words before resurrecting her in order to speak to the Governor. I thought that was a nice touch.

Interesting, I could swear that I didn't need to disarm a floor trap to win. I checked the map here for Baya Malay, am I missing something? Bear in mind I haven't played through the game in probably 5 years.

BTW Miracle Warriors is a swell game. Music is especially good.

If you're talking about the graphical maps, then yes, they're missing the pit trap you need to bypass. It's in the middle of the path on the 5th floor. O3 actually drops you somewhere else, and the O3 on the fourth floor is the spot that the pit trap in the middle of the path drops you.

This FAQ has more accurate maps:

Sorry I'm late to this topic, but here's my 2 cents with your questions:

There's a building in Gothic to the left of the church that's empty. If you go inside the menu will come up. Is there anything you can do in this building?

Nothing there, I think its just there to show that some villages are getting poor and run down.

In the prison is someone who mentions having a friend in Bortevo that I should visit; however, the only two people in Bortevo make no mention of a friend in prison, nor are they that friendly. Am I missing something from this hint?

The man says that his friend is having a hard time in Bortevo, I think its just to emphasize that Bortevo is a very poor and run-down town.

Is there a point in giving Cola to the man in Sopia? I only gave him two (all I had), but he just said the same pointless thing. Does he say anything different if you keep giving him more?

No, he never says anything different, its just one of those useless dialoges common in older RPGs.

I admire your quest about playing all RPGs, good luck with it ; ) I hope you can play Miracle Worriors soon, that game is fantastic!

This is what I figured, but I don't remember any other time an empty house brought up the menu. Maybe it was lost content that got cut in the final build...

Thanks! If I can't get it on the low end from ebay, I may resort to going about playing it by other means. I hate to do it, but I don't want to play too far ahead. Imagine me trying to compare it to PS2 games. With it being such an old game I'm hoping there aren't any issues with that. It'd be nice if all old games were brought to market again through something like the Wii Virtual Console.

I wish I had the patience to beat this game without a guide /: I needed to use maps or else I would have thrown my system out the window.
