I finished the game a month ago for the first time without using any maps or the like. While it was frustrating, and it probably doubled the game time, it was truly a rewarding experience.
Personally, I consider it the best 8-bit RPG I've played (definitely better than the DQ and FF's on the NES). Not to mention, my favorite female protagonist along with Celes (FFVI) and Lenneth (Valkyrie Profile).

I'm sure I'll get to that point many times, I know I'm already starting to feel that way about Ultima: Exodus. I know it's such a grind, and difficult, but I'm still enjoying it.
