The multiplayer for Battlestations Midway is actually quite addictive. I bought the game for $10, and have probably played it for around 100 hours. It definitely is more arcade action, but it is also more of an RTS that had limited units (the only bases in the games are airfields/carriers and shipyards, and if you don't count launching aircraft, then most maps only have a set number of units). It's nice to be able to micromanage your units, and the interface is great. There's also a sequel coming out soon. But I can't recommend it if you're a hardcore sim fan. Get it for the 360 for great multiplayer, although it can be hard to find games if you're trying to play in the middle of the night or something. --- Xbox Live Gamertag - FINALmasa
Hi SailorVenusSHS, and thank you *waves hello* ^.^/ Here's a similar topic, which I'll copy-and-paste to here to keep the related information together ^.^ - - - - - - - - - - - - So I'm trying something new....a new game in fact.... From: AdmTom | Posted: 2/18/2008 9:01:55 PM I just ordered a copy of "War in the Pacific". From reading about it, the game looks almost prohibitively complex.....but that's what we like, isn't it? ;-) Anybody played it? If so, what are your thoughts? - - - - - - - - - - - - From: BigTexan80 | Posted: 2/19/2008 10:40:45 AM I haven't heard of it. Is it a PC game? You'll have to tell us how it is. I just googled it, and -holy smokes - does it look complex. Still, if it has a multi player mode I might see about getting too - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Lord_Zath2 | Posted: 2/19/2008 11:52:25 AM It looks allright. The strategic map looks cool, but there's only one screenshot of naval combat, and it looks rather bland and boring. I just started playing Pacific Storm Allies. I must say I was rather impressed with its capabilities and real-time battle graphics. It still crashes to the desktop, and there is still a good amount of slowdown in the game, however. - - - - - - - - - - - - From: AdmTom | Posted: 2/19/2008 10:02:00 PM One of the coolest features of this game, in my opinion, is that there's a "play by e-mail" feature built in.... perfect for you Big Texan! I won't get it for another few days, but I'll be sure to post a full review on here once I have a few hours put into it. I'll be the first to admit the graphics aren't stunning, but supposedly the A.I. actually has a few shreds of intelligence, and there aren't ridiculous limits like 128 ships per side. Supposedly there can be thousands of ships and tens of thousands of aircraft. You have to deal with supply convoys (much more realistically than in PTO though). I'd better stop listing features before I get too giddy again. Anyway, I'll let y'all know how it is! - - - - - - - - - - - - (end of copied-and-pasted topic) --- kawaiifan, happy to be back on her old account ^.^

Another topic about a similar game ^.^ - - - - - - - - - - - - It's official...I found a better WWII game than PTO 2 From: AdmTom | Posted: 3/10/2008 1:31:06 PM War in the Pacific for PC is amazing! True, the learning curve will take you about a month....it's ridiculously complex.....but it's a very complete game. There are thousands of ships, down to individual transports and tankers plus destroyers I've never even heard of. I thought you could do a lot in PTO and PTO 2.... but I was wrong. So say it takes even on a hectic turn with lots of orders and changes, maybe 30 minutes at most to finish a turn on PTO 2? In the big campaign on War in the Pacific, it takes me nearly 2 hours to take care of everything I need to do in one turn. The combat is much more realistic too. You don't have entire air wings decimated every time you send them up against a heavily defended base. Subs can get hit multiple times before they sink. Ships don't instantly sink either.... they sometimes take several days to sink after they're hit badly. I seriously can't even describe all the detail this game has in the space on here. For some examples of what is included with the game, go to www.matrixgames.com and go to their forums section. There's a War in the Pacific thread near the bottom of the page. You can read all sorts of posts and see all the sweet things the game has in it. - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Lord_Zath2 | Posted: 3/12/2008 11:22:42 AM Sounds cool. What of the graphics and such? Do you feel like you're actually watching your ships punish the enemy? - - - - - - - - - - - - From: BigTexan80 | Posted: 3/13/2008 11:18:06 AM Well I downloaded the manual for the game to check it out. It is 220 pages long! Still I think I'll get the game. I just have to wiat until I have an extra 60 to drop (That's the only downside I can see - $60 for the downloaded version and $70 for the CDs + shipping) I did have a question on the game - can you directly control ships and submarines? From what I can tell, it's no - - - - - - - - - - - - From: AdmTom | Posted: 3/18/2008 12:00:43 PM Search for War in the Pacific on Ebay. There's a guy from Poland that sells the game for cheaper than the Matrix store. The shipping is $7.50 to the US, but I got my copy of the game for $41 from him ($48.50 with shipping). Even at full price though, the game is worth it. To answer your question Big Texan, you can control where fleets go (TF's or Task Forces on War in the Pacific), but the individual ship and fleet commanders (yes, you can assign commanders to both) decide what to attack and when. You have much more control over land-based planes too. You can give target for land-based bomber attacks, set percentages of fighter squadrons to be used for combat air patrols, and plenty of other options. Like I mentioned earlier too, there are individual named transports and tankers, and hundreds of warships (DD's and CL's mainly) that I've never even seen on a war game before. - - - - - - - - - - - - (continued in next post) --- kawaiifan, happy to be back on her old account ^.^
(continued from previous post) - - - - - - - - - - - - The game truly is amazing. I've had it for 3 weeks, and I'm just finally starting to get a good handle on it. Really the only downside, apart from the learning curve, is that you can't control ship production. It's similar to PTO 1 in that ships just appear when and where they actually entered the war. The game is very realistic, a hell of a lot more so than any of the PTO games. The combat has very realistic results (none of that 8 destroyers taking on 8 battleship and coming out ahead crap). Doing supplies is kinda a hassle though. There is an auto-convoy option, but from what I've read from the "Experts" on the game, it's kinda broken, and doesn't keep your bases supplied like it's supposed to. So, effectively, you have to make your own convoys, which is actually kinda fun though. But, I have to go and take care of homework I've been putting off. Get the game! If you like PTO or PTO 2, you'll like War in the Pacific 10x more after you get the hang of it! - - - - - - - - - - - - From: AdmTom | Posted: 3/18/2008 12:02:33 PM Correction.... you can assign targets or destinations for the fleets to attack, but the combat is all simulated, you can't go in and tell ships to shoot at what. The game is really good though about targeting high-value ships. Say there's a CV in a fleet.....even in simulated combat, the attacking force, be it planes, ships, or subs, will make a hard effort to get that CV instead of just some lowly destroyer or tanker. - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Lord_Zath2 | Posted: 3/20/2008 12:57:12 PM ok, but how does combat work? Do you actually see it go down like in PTO1? Or is it just a stats screen like in PTO2? - - - - - - - - - - - - From: AdmTom | Posted: 3/20/2008 7:29:28 PM You can turn the "combat animations" option off, and it will just give you stats. The stats are much more detailed on this game though..... It tells you specifically how many times each ship was hit and by what type of ordinance. It tells you if the ship is on fire or flooding, and if it says "heavy damage", you'd better get the ship to a port fast. If you have combat animations turned on, it's nothing special, I find them quite worthless and time consuming. Say there's an air attack..... it just pops up with an actually decently done animation of a bomb scope, and then you see explosions either on or around the target, depending on whether or not you hit it. For a submarine attack, it gives you a similar view, but through a somewhat decently animated periscope. Like I said, the animations really aren't worth it. I just find they add more time to a game that already takes 10-15 minutes to process all the action each turn anyway. And yes, there really is that much going on in this game that after you spend at least 20 minutes checking statuses and issuing orders, it takes another 10-15 minutes for your system to process everything that goes on with those thousands of ships, tens of thousands of planes, and dozens of submarines. Oh, one more thing...... like sub wolfpacks? Go right ahead! You can group subs together in this game. - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Lord_Zath2 | Posted: 3/22/2008 8:43:31 AM So is do you get readouts in battle as each ship fires its guns/torps/etc? Or is it PTOII style where you get one massive stat screen detailing everything that happened in the battle? - - - - - - - - - - - - From: ironduke50 | Posted: 3/25/2008 12:12:37 PM Well I just bought my copy. - - - - - - - - - - - - From: kawaiifan | Posted: 4/7/2008 2:42:54 AM Nice find AdmTom *cheers* \^.^/ --- kawaiifan, happy to be back on her old account ^.^ - - - - - - - - - - - - (and two saves by me) --- kawaiifan, happy to be back on her old account ^.^

Hey I found this out: http://www.matrixgames.com/products/351/details/War.in.the.Pacific.-.Admiral%27s.Edition In other words, there is a new War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition in development, no release date yet. I haven't managed to get my hands on the original game, though I might just wait for the new one. Oh, and glad to be back. Real life has an ugly way of intervening in one's Internet habits. Also, Hearts of Iron 2 and its expansions (Doomsday is a standalone expansion, while Armageddon is an expansion that requires Doomsday) does a great job of covering World War 2 if you want to see more than the PTO. Want to build supercarriers with jet aircraft as Germany, for instance? Research and build them (though it might cost you in dealing with the USSR). There are also many mods out there that make it even more interesting. --- Lay me on the ground, fly me in the sky, show me where to look, tell me what will I find.[OBFC]
Game looks good. I'd love to get back into the WWII games. BTW, patch 1.52 for Pacific Storm Allies is out for US version. It supposedly fixes all CTD's...
