ScribblemacherPosted 10/25/2007 9:58:26 PM | I was reading some of Gamespot's reviews of VC games and I noticed they called Gradius III punishing and R-Type III forgiving. Considering that Gradius III has a difficulty setting and R-type III does not, I found this really perplexing. Having played both, I've always felt that R-Type III was infinitely more difficult. Did they add a difficulty setting for the VC release or something? Or dumb it down? R-type III still gives me nightmares.... That one level where you go backwards -- !

The SNES version of Gradius III is almost too easy, but it's still much less forgiving than R-Type III. A better comparison might be the original R-Type to Gradius III, though I'd argue it still has more parts where you're in deep trouble if you die. Forgiving and punishing have more to do with what happens when you die than overall difficulty. --- Help improve GameFAQs: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=7&topic=37743164 |
MathUPosted 10/26/2007 5:34:40 AM | On another note, while the SNES version of Gradius III is not too hard, I always have trouble believing that there are people who've actually beaten the arcade version. You almost have to one-life clear that game because there are several parts where there is no freaking way you're going to make a comeback if you die. --- Help improve GameFAQs: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=7&topic=37743164 |
Scribblemacher (Topic Creator) Posted 10/26/2007 8:57:08 PM | If that's anything like play the SNES Gradius III on the arcade difficulty setting, that certainly is difficult. Gradius though seems to be surmountable with rote memorization rather than being "skilled" per say. Some of the R-Type games though, not so much Super R-Type but definitely R-Type III and R-Type Final, it seems like no level of memorization by itself will get you through alone.
R-Type Final is a different story though. It's so easy to die in that game when you can't distinguish what objects can and cannot kill you. And half the time I want to kill myself as I'm sitting there for 30 seconds while nothing happens as the background rotates! --- "What Mr Goss has said is indeed correct" - alxbly "That makes the 33rd time Dave Goss was right." - Requiem |

Splatterhouse5Posted 11/29/2007 11:55:20 AM | Beating Gradius III SNES on lower difficulties is as hard as shaving. Beating Gradius III SNES on "arcade" is as hard as shaving in the dark with a machete. Beating Gradius III Arcade is as hard as sawing your own head off with a hacksaw. And then juggling it. |

LyreatPosted 1/18/2008 1:40:34 AM | I'll have to agree.
I own Gradius III on the SNES, and though I haven't played it for, like, a decade, I remember several completely harsh parts (like the Gauntlet and the last three or four levels). It's still infinitely more forgiving than R-Type. I can't even get past the first level without dying at least twice. |

OokPosted 3/8/2008 4:30:45 PM | I would have to agree- not to say that either game was particularly easy, but Gradius is always less forgiving than R-Type. --- AQUN 4EVR! Currently Playing: Pokemon Ruby |
