Ok, I have heard some stuff about this game but didnt really read in depth. Took the plunge and bought the MM pack on steam. I know the clash of Heroes is a puzzle game havingplayed the DS version. So what is this game like? What do you do in this game? Is this an RPG game similar to FF tactics! tactics ogre or what? How's the state of HoMM V now? Sorry for my questions but I am really curious what this game is --- I always go to Dragonsreach to discuss the ongoing Hoshtilities like the rest of the great warriors
It's split into several different parts. Think... Total War series type movement around a map, during battle it's a turn based grid-system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and then it has city management similar to... I guess Civ?
Emoge posted... It's split into several different parts. Think... Total War series type movement around a map, during battle it's a turn based grid-system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and then it has city management similar to... I guess Civ? Are you saying that its all of my favorite TBS games rolled into one neat game? Sweet! I can't control myself not to shell the additional cash so I bought HoMM III from GOG as well (Don't know if it was the right move since I was choosing between 3 and 4) just to see what it was like compared to the newer versions. I am still queuing up the download since I bought a lot from Steam, Hopefully going to play it as soon as all is downloaded. Any links to further explain the game/series by any chance? I sort of snubbed the game sometime ago after seeing its warcraft III like graphics. --- I always go to Dragonsreach to discuss the ongoing Hoshtilities like the rest of the great warriors
What have you played? I mean Generally its a game where you get cities, which produce daily income, and every week you recruit troops, and you get leaders to lead those troops (leaders don't fight, they just provide bonuses to the troops and cast spells if they have mana) and well, the object is to defeat the enemy and take all his cities. During the steam sale I purchased king's bounty, the legend or something. Combat is not dissimiliar to king's bounty apparently. Watch a youtube video. but its about abusing random tactics to make stuff die in large numbers. you have several races with different units from the cities, and there are various bonus buildings on the map that, provide bonuses. MINES: important for hiring troops and building buildings in town, mostly for building stuff you need resources that aren't just gold. Troops mostly need just gold. Creature huts: every week they get a week's supply of units (no castle bonus) and they provide +1 growth in cities than have similiar huts. very broken when you have a few of the top tier units huts and a few cities producing them. One hut and one city is 2 extra units, but 3 huts and 3 cities is 12 extra units see? and 12 spare (+6 regular growth with a castle) of any top tier unit a week is probably enough to cream anything. HoMM 5 incorporated more ...interesting race mechanics and skill sets. It gave each race a recruit mechanic I guess you'd call it. where you take a leader of the right race and have him lead his troops and he can recruit them better. Haven: He's got training, which means he can take the junky lower tier trash units that would die, and upgrade them to higher tier units. Necropolis: Pairs really well with haven. Haven knight goes and upgrades footmen to Monks, and moves them over to the necropolis, and you make lots of liches. Necropolis has other units, but Pretty sure money wise, several stacks of lich are impressive. The necromancer himself has a necromancy ability that allows him to raise defeated foes in some amount per week, useful more early game. getting skeletons and upgrading them to archers. Light Elves, just a brokenly good race. Honestly I never play them anymore, aside from needing wood badly, they are extremely broken. Dark Elves, seems slightly weak, but its a nuking with spells race, so the units are arbitrary, just to keep the mage alive long enough to do his work. Demons: Gating.. its sorta weaksauce, so they suck. Academy: Human Mages, gets an artificer ability to make its units like twice as good as normal. Dwarvens: added with expansion, defensive race, but with runes of charge they are basically very fast melee units with lots of tanking ability, which ruins alot of people's days. Orcs: Odd race, the slave pits allow you to sell units for a profit if you can't afford to raise them, which is nice. a large orc horde can have its hero do its number in damage as a warcry, and damage to the army is reduced with rage. so its interesting, not sure if its balanced, but they get alot of offense. --- If the next one is called, because of his MO, the underwear bomber, you'll know I'm on to something. As for HoMM 6. I am still downloading it. There are demos, but uh, you own the game right? yeah. --- If the next one is called, because of his MO, the underwear bomber, you'll know I'm on to something. Calvin Trillin June 16, 2006.
Thanks for the info mate. I owned 3 complete edition from GOG, HoMM pack from steam which contains 5 with expansions, 6, Clash of heroes and dark messiah. I know dark messiah is not HoMM and clash of heroes is a spin off. I gave 3 a try and I must say it was great. I sort of played 3 for a bit while downloading the HoMM pack from STEAM. I got beaten by my opponents since I don't know how to recruit armies and all. Last set of question and just to clarify something. Is the gameplay or the premise of the game similar in 3,5,6 but (obviously) new mechanics and whatnot is added in 5 and 6? Is 4 worth getting or I made a good decision getting 3? (Probably going to get 4 sooner or later but a bit reluctant in getting 1 and 2 since I have problems running games as old as master of magic/ master of orion on my laptop) --- I always go to Dragonsreach to discuss the ongoing Hoshtilities like the rest of the great warriors
HoMM 4 isn't really the same. The thing with HoMM 4 is heroes actively fight, so if you give them combat tree, they become immune to magic and can hold their own against black dragons, and level up. Considering they cast spells, and can run away, and can be given extra lives with 1000 Potions of immortality, Heroes are more COST EFFECTIVE then armies. with Nobility, heroes are more cost effective than mines. Reasonably well geared and specc'd heroes can devestate armies of immense size at higher levels. It quite against the spirit of a heroes game. But if you like Magic the gathering, I think it sort of feels like a magic the gathering game, as it split the game into 6 races, which could easily be White, Blue, Green, Red, Black and Artifact. Campaign wise its mostly just give the guy combat, Scouting, and 3 magic trees depending on what the campaign gives you. Life and Nature get to level 3 spells very easily, allowing a hero to buff himself, and then simply heal and retaliate. Death can be trained to Advanced + basic necromancy, then just kick it in 5 upgrades to Grandmaster necromancy, and your guy will make 2-3 vampires after every fight, which are a stunningly broken unit, especially buffed with some spells Red doesn't make me as happy, other spells seem to do what it does better, but cat reflexes is a decent spell, bloodlust, and slayer, come in handy. Blue....I think blue needs more than a marginal investment to shine. but its handy I guess. its got its summon spells, its direct damage spells, but its its higher level spells that screw people over, its mind control, Blind, Forgetfulness, Beserk. But no, its not a very HoMM game. its a different game. --- If the next one is called, because of his MO, the underwear bomber, you'll know I'm on to something. Calvin Trillin June 16, 2006.
Thanks mate! I've been playing HoMM 3 for a couple of hours and I have to admit I am hooked and never regret getting into the series. Gonna give 5 and 6 a go once I clear out the campaign.of 3. Now I understand why the feel of the game is so familiar. Its like MtG and man I missed the good old days of MtG. My thoughts about the series. HoMM3 is great and I don't mind the old graphics but it feels appropriate for the game. I mean I feel scared of the demons of HoMM3 compared to the demons of 4 and 5. The explosion animation of 3 reminds me when something explodes in south park. I will never regret purchasing and getting into the series. Gonna buy 4 later and give it a go --- I always go to Dragonsreach to discuss the ongoing Hoshtilities like the rest of the great warriors
I am sorry but I have to double post. I was lucky today because I found the heroes of might and magic collection at the mall and I bought it. After reading your explanation of HoMM 4 I was about to purchase it when I get home but now I found a hard copy containing 1-5 with expansions. One HoMM cost 9.99 at GOG and I got 3 for $4.99 due to their holiday sale. Going to try and play from 1 upto 6 if my computer will let me run 1 or 2. I am happy that I saved a lot since the HoMM collection I got cost me only 29.99 --- I always go to Dragonsreach to discuss the ongoing Hoshtilities like the rest of the great warriors |
