You can still pay GCPs to get the best gems/gear in the game. Also, you can purchase enough Regrets to do a full re-spec. That's advantageous over other players if you ask me.

Flagship Studios ran Mythos for free for many years without any online micro transactions. And that was a fun little arpg. Of course, it never really saw an end to beta testing. Mythos dev team went on to develop a little game called Torchlight after it shut down.


So I am willing to guess that running an arpg isn't as expensive as people think.
