Slowly improving Race placements. Just finished 39th Overall and 7th Ranger.

39th place on the three-hour party Race that just ended. Partied with one IRL friend and he left after we turned lvl 27. Took it a bit slower after he left and had a few bars left til 30. Realistically I think I could have been 35-37th. Here's the link

Finished 7th place among Rangers. You like the level difference between my place (7th) and 6th place? Lol

You should petition for Cybrix's place in the noLife group. Get carried!

Is there a generally accepted "best practice" for leveling quickly in the races, such as rushing through all the quests versus grinding/overleveling first?

Depends on what level tier you're aiming for. Of course I can't give out my secrets like exactly when to do this quest or how long should you farm there....but as a simple guideline:
- Don't do quests that only give Refund Points (ex. Fetid Pool)
- Lure enemies into a big group before you engage don't kill every last straggler or you'll waste time
- Ledge, The Forest, Western Forest, and City of Sarn are popular areas
- If solo, use Waypoints and Portals in a combination that will greatly save you time and effort
- If party, use other members and their Portals in a certain way that will greatly save you time and focus
- And pretty much use everything else you've learned from game mechanics.

rofl wow, dat ego

kripp/nugi/etc stream races where they get demigods. there are no "secrets", it's just about consistent efficient play, recognising opportunities to save some time and maximising your chances for good rng.

edit: for anyone who's interested you can find archives of those races on their twitch tv accounts, and check out the 'secrets'

There are quite a few. Maybe "secrets" was the wrong term used as it sounds game-breaking/exploiting. More like "advanced tips that you would not be able to figure out until after hours of understanding the game mechanics"

P.S. Let me know what place you finished in that race.

the fact that "secrets" was the wrong term was the entire basis of my post. I really doubt you have any knowledge of poe that isn't avaialble to the general public, and if you do it clearly isn't enough for you to beat the players that make their entire races viewable to thousands of people so it probably isn't a big deal. the fact that players who regularly win races stream both the races themselves and their preparation/planning quite simply means that everything important is available to the public.

obviously there are a lot of things that are far too detailed for you to explain to him in a single gamefaqs post, but that's not because they are "secret" at all, it's just because like you said you have to invest hours into researching them or even longer if you were to figure them all out yourself. using the word "secret" just seemed like some petty way to make yourself seem superior, like you had some insider poe knowledge that he could never find out and you were not going to tell him about.

as for my position in the race, I didn't play (not that that's relevant at all -- we're talking about information here not execution, whether or not someone performed better than someone else says nothing for their relative expertise, especially in an rng based game like this). I haven't played poe at all for a week or so, since my last HC character died. can't really think of any build that i want to play.

Ah, so that explains why that post was so salty.
